Church art, a museum dedicated to mother-of-pearl processing and trails to an abandoned settlement give Senetářov and its immediate surroundings a cultural and historical focus. When planning your trip, you can choose which themes to prioritize: St. Joseph’s Church and the exhibition offer cultural attractions in the village, while walking and cycling routes provide further ways to explore the surrounding area.

St. Joseph’s Church and a work by Mikuláš Medek

St. Joseph’s Church was built between 1969 and 1971 to replace a chapel and was consecrated on 7 July 1991. The construction and consecration mark different stages in the church’s history: building work continued over several years, and the consecration took place later. Another point of art-historical interest is the Stations of the Cross in the church, created by artist and academic painter Mikuláš Medek. St. Joseph’s thus brings together its architectural history and a specific, named work of art—two different ways to explore the church and its history.

Mother-of-pearl processing in a traditional farmstead

The Museum of Traditional Living and Mother-of-Pearl Processing is housed in a preserved farmstead built of unfired bricks and topped with a thatched roof. The exhibition traces the production of mother-of-pearl buttons through 14 stages of work. The process runs from handling the raw shell to sewing the finished buttons onto cards. This makes the production process itself, not just the finished product, a subject of the exhibition. The exhibition is not wheelchair accessible. Take this limitation into account when planning your visit and check the access arrangements before you travel.

Bystřec: hiking trail and settlement history

The abandoned settlement of Bystřec lies in the immediate vicinity of Senetářov. It was founded in the mid-13th century, and the first written record dates from 1349. These two dates mark different historical points of reference: the foundation on the one hand and the first written mention on the other. A green hiking trail follows the Senetářovský potok stream to Bystřec. If you would like to combine a hike with a historical destination, you can follow the streamside trail and explore the history of the abandoned settlement.

A technical monument in the immediate vicinity

The Ruprechtov windmill also adds to the cultural history of the surrounding area. A Halladay turbine was installed there between 1882 and 1884. The windmill is a technical monument, and proposals have been made to designate it a national cultural monument and include it on the UNESCO list. Its technical focus differs from the church art at St. Joseph’s and the traditional crafts featured in the museum. The immediate area thus brings together a range of themes: sacred art, traditional living and mother-of-pearl processing, and technological history.

Cycling around Senetářov

Cycling Route 5079 passes through Senetářov. A cycling route through the nearby Rakovecké Valley is listed as 28 km long and taking about 2 hours and 30 minutes. It follows a stream through a peaceful landscape. The two route descriptions help with different planning questions: Route 5079 passes through the village, while the length and approximate duration give a clearer picture of the ride through the Rakovecké Valley. The landscape description adds another detail to these figures. Since route alignments and trail conditions can change, check the current route before setting off.
