Bořitov offers a cultural and historical perspective on different periods: the Church of St. George (Kostel svatého Jiří) is dated to the early Romanesque period, while settlement at the hillfort on Malý Chlum is dated to the Late Bronze Age. For travel planning, it is also important to know that the wooden lookout tower on Malý Chlum is currently closed because of structural damage.

Church of St. George (Kostel svatého Jiří)

The church’s construction is dated, depending on the assessment, to the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century. Its classification as early Romanesque therefore spans a period of time. The church stands on a low hill where a pagan place of worship stood before the Christian era.

According to the inscription on the church tower’s cross, the year 1305 is given; during the restoration of the church, the Chapel of St. Anne (svaté Anny) was added in 1480. The church is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. These details mark different milestones: a construction date spanning a period, a year on the tower inscription and the later addition of the chapel.

Malý Chlum: Hillfort and Lookout Tower

Malý Chlum is also known as Holý Chlum. At the southern edge of its plateau, a remnant of the stone wall and a spiral staircase cut into the natural rock are still visible. Settlement at the hillfort there is dated to the Late Bronze Age. The dating and the surviving features of the terrain offer different perspectives on the site.

A wooden lookout tower was built on Malý Chlum in 2005. From there, the view extends in all directions. The tower is intended to operate year-round, but is currently closed because of structural damage. Check its current status again before your trip.

The Sculpture Group on Velký Chlum

The sculpture group of Hussite fighters is located on Velký Chlum near Bořitov and was restored in 2023. It is helpful for planning to distinguish between the similar names: the hillfort and lookout tower are on Malý Chlum, while the sculpture group is on Velký Chlum.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Bořitov has good road connections via expressway 43 and district road 377. For cyclists riding through Bořitov, there is an information board at the intersection of Loužky and Polní streets. The two details relate to different navigation needs: the roads describe general access, while the board identifies a specific location for cyclists in the village.

The historical attractions also focus on different themes: the church highlights architectural history and a protected cultural monument, while Malý Chlum features Bronze Age settlement and visible features of the plateau. The sculpture group on Velký Chlum adds a Hussite theme to this selection.
