Vážany combines a distinctive setting in the landscape with notable traces of its local history. The village lies north of Boskovice in the Boskovice Furrow, a largely unforested landscape about five kilometres wide and one hundred kilometres long. These approximate dimensions give a sense of the Furrow as an elongated landscape. Geologically, it is also connected to the Moravian Karst: Devonian limestone from the Karst extends as far as Vážany. The landscape and bedrock thus offer two different perspectives on the surroundings—the open expanse of the Furrow and the continuation of the Karst rock.
Church and Remembrance
At the southwestern edge of Vážany stands the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (“Kostel Zvěstování Panny Marie”), a small central-plan building laid out in the shape of a Greek cross. Its floor plan arranges the building around a central space with four arms. A dome vaults the central space, while the cross arms have barrel vaults with intersecting triangular vaulting sections. The interior layout can thus be understood through two structural elements: the domed core and the four arms of the cross-shaped plan. The sacristy contains a historically valuable Last Supper painted on wood. The architecture and painting provide different focal points within the church: the structure of the space on the one hand, and a depiction on wood on the other.
A monument to those who fell in the First World War, erected in 1925, stands in front of the church. It adds a distinct place of remembrance to the church architecture. The church and monument bring together two distinct themes: religious architecture and remembrance of the fallen.
Archaeological Finds and Manor Farmstead
Vejštice Hill lies south of the village. Archaeological excavations there uncovered stone tools, five so-called Bell Beakers, two bowls and three small jugs. The group of finds includes both tools and a variety of vessel forms. Here, the focus is on movable finds, whereas the church and farmstead are defined by their architectural features. The manor farmstead preserved in Vážany has a different historical connection: above its gate is a coat of arms bearing the year 1685. Vejštice and the farmstead thus represent two distinct historical traces—excavated objects on the hill and a dated coat of arms on a surviving building.
Leisure and Planning
The tennis court in Vážany is open to the general public and is also used for volleyball and nohejbal. If you plan to use the court during your trip, check its availability before you arrive. Dětský den is a traditional event primarily intended for children, held at Hasičský dům Vážany; it is listed in the municipal events calendar for 2026. The date and programme may vary from year to year. The two planning considerations therefore differ: for the sports court, availability matters; for the event, check the date and programme for that year.
