Finistere’s coastline stretches for 2,263 kilometres. There are also 6,200 kilometres of hiking trails—two very different ways to experience the region. The routes also merit a closer look: the figures refer to different activities and planning schemes.

Trails for different activities

A total of 6,300 kilometres of marked routes are designated for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. In addition, the département’s hiking and trekking plan covers 4,300 kilometres of registered routes. The first figure combines three possible activities on marked routes; the second refers to routes included in the plan. When planning, this distinction can help you decide whether you are looking for a particular activity or for routes listed in the hiking plan.

For cycling trips, Finistere has more than 900 kilometres of departmental cycle routes. They have adapted signage, markings in both directions and safety improvements. More than 100 kilometres of greenways follow the routes of former railway lines. This means there are cycle routes with signposting alongside paths whose routes were once railway lines.

Explore the landscape and nature

Within Finistere, the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique encompasses the Monts d’Arrée, the Aulne Valley, Brest Harbour, the Crozon Peninsula and the Iroise Islands. Its landscapes include France’s largest Atlantic heathland complex and Brittany’s largest peatland complex; together, they cover more than 10,000 hectares. The expansive natural areas contrast with the individual coastal and heritage sites that visitors can also discover.

In the Finistere département, Lac de Saint-Michel and Lac du Drennec are the two largest reservoirs. The Iroise National Nature Reserve represents a different scale: it covers 1,129 hectares, of which 1,008 hectares are in the public maritime domain. Between the Crozon Peninsula and the Monts d’Arrée, the Armorique UNESCO Global Geopark illustrates more than 500 million years of Earth’s history. Along the Crozon Peninsula, more than 400 sea caves in the geopark are considered accessible on foot or by kayak.

For coastal walks or fishing, the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique advises checking the weather, route choice and tides in advance. This is practical guidance for activities where coastal conditions are part of the planning.

Maritime heritage and local discoveries

Visitors can also encounter maritime culture in the surviving traces of seafaring: the Iroise Marine Park preserves tangible heritage such as lighthouses, shipwrecks and archaeological sites. At the Sémaphore de Molène, an interactive presentation explains the daily life and duties of the island watchkeepers. These offer two different ways to explore the subject—through preserved evidence on the one hand, and through the work of the people who kept watch on the islands on the other.

The Finistère département has around fifteen museums, cultural venues and historic sites spread across the département. Activities in the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique also extend beyond a single way of exploring: you can take part on foot, by bike, on horseback, in and on the water, or in the air. A visitor route along the maritime Aulne combines a traditional sailing crossing with cycling, hiking and kayaking. It offers a specific combination of different activities, without presenting it as a single programme for the whole region.

Local food culture offers another perspective on Finistere. Kouign plaked from Penmarc’h is considered a buttery, flaky version of the famous Breton cake. In the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique, producers use short food supply chains and sell their products at farms or local markets. Alongside the landscape and heritage, regional produce is another reason to visit in its own right.
