Six kilometres of coastline, diverse landscapes

The GR 34 long-distance hiking trail runs along the six-kilometre coast of Locmaria-Plouzané. Cliffs around 50 metres high dominate much of the landscape, along with three beaches and coves. Those who enjoy walking will find the GR 34 a clear point of reference for following the coastline.

The coastal heath is also part of the area’s character: eleven hectares have been acquired by the Conservatoire du Littoral. This protected area safeguards flora and fauna and provides a place for birds to nest in spring. Another natural feature can be seen on Porsmilin Beach: at low tide, tree stumps and trunks emerge from a peat bog that is more than 4,500 years old. To experience this phenomenon, plan your visit around low tide.

Water activities and trails on land

Visitors can launch kayaks, paddleboards and bodyboards from Trégana Beach; water sports are possible when the waves are good. Bodyboarding lessons and paddleboarding trips are offered from Porsmilin Beach. Availability may vary by season, so it is worth checking what is on offer in advance. Geologically, Déolen Cove is a calanque and is considered a surf spot between the cliffs. Planning therefore involves different conditions: good waves at Trégana and the possibility of seasonal limits on activities offered from Porsmilin.

There are also several ways to stay active on land: Locmaria-Plouzané has several circular hiking trails, as well as mountain biking loops and cycling routes. When planning, you can therefore choose how to balance hiking, cycling and water activities rather than focusing your stay on just one way of exploring.

Summer programme and cultural heritage

Les Mardis de Portez is a series of open-air concerts held every summer, featuring local musicians and invited guests. If you would like to include them in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year. Manoir de Kerscao also welcomes visitors seasonally, from 30 June to 30 September. This period may change from year to year, so check before planning a visit.

The cultural heritage of Locmaria-Plouzané includes the Church of Notre Dame de Lanvénec. New stained-glass windows were installed at the Chapelle de Lesconvel in May 2025, brightening, protecting and enhancing the chapel. These places and buildings add a historical and cultural focus to a stay that also includes coastal scenery and activities.

The history of communications is also present in Locmaria-Plouzané: the former building in Déolen was France’s first centre for transatlantic telegraph communications. From 1879 to 1962, submarine cables connected Europe and America from there. The Batterie de Gauche in Toulbroc'h, at Pointe du Grand Minou, was used to defend the entrance to the Goulet de Brest.

When to visit and finding a holiday rental

When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by deciding on your priorities and preferred travel dates: the coast and nature, water sports, trails or cultural discoveries each lead to different travel plans. If you want to include the summer concerts or a visit to the manor house, factor their dates into your plans. Visits to the manor house are seasonal, and the visiting period may change from year to year.
