The GR38 long-distance hiking trail passes through Stangala and Stang Luzigou; its route runs from Douarnenez to Redon. In Ergué-Gabéric, you can also choose a hike based on specific distances, stated walking times and difficulty levels.
Hiking routes by distance and duration
The municipality offers three blue-marked circular walking routes ranging from 1.4 to 9 kilometres. Check trail conditions before setting out. “Le tour du bourg de pierres en arbres” is a 6.2-kilometre circular route around the town centre. “Autour de Lestonan” and “Balade à Kerdévot” also provide specific points of comparison: the first route is 13.5 kilometres long, moderately difficult and listed as taking 3 hours 30 minutes. The second covers 3.5 kilometres, has a very low difficulty level and a stated duration of 1 hour 15 minutes. This offers a clear contrast between a shorter, easy walk and a longer, moderately difficult route. “Sentiers d’interprétation” in Stang Luzigou is another route, 2.7 kilometres long.
Stangala and natural attractions
Stangala extends partly across Ergué-Gabéric, Quimper and Briec and covers a total of 90 hectares. It has been classified as a site and natural monument of artistic character since 6 July 1929. Protected species found there include the royal fern and the Quimper snail. The trails, footbridges, facilities and signage at Stangala are maintained in partnership with the municipalities.
A former quarry offers a walking path and a viewpoint overlooking the reservoir. The viewpoint can be reached via a path developed for everyone. The Kerho arboretum in Lestonan features 48 forest and ornamental plant species along an eight-hectare botanical trail. The arboretum also includes the “Sentier des demoiselles”.
Buildings and history
The Church of Saint-Guinal, also known as Saint-Gwenaël, was built largely in the 16th century. Its old cemetery preserves a 17th-century charnel house, opened by arcades onto the enclosed churchyard. The church, cemetery and charnel house were classified as historic monuments by decree dated 23 October 1939.
The Kerdévot Chapel dates from the 15th century. It includes a monumental 16th-century calvary and a Flemish altarpiece. The Manoir de Lezergué is listed as a historic monument. These buildings showcase different historical and architectural themes: from the chapel and its associated features to the manor house listed as a monument.
Industrial history is also linked to a specific date: a paper mill was founded in 1822 and, under the influence of the Bolloré family, developed into the Odet paper mill. Together with the churches of different ages and the Stangala landscape, this provides a range of themes to shape a stay in Ergué-Gabéric.
