Locmaria-Berrien offers several historical perspectives: religious buildings, mining history and the Les deux vallées route along a former railway line. This allows you to explore architectural history, industrial heritage and former transport infrastructure as different areas of interest.

Religious buildings: design and history

The parish church of Notre-Dame is a 16th-century building. Its granite masonry, elongated floor plan and rounded choir apse provide concrete clues to its architectural form. The elongated floor plan describes the stretched shape of the building; the choir apse is rounded at the end of the choir. The material, basic form and apse are different starting points for understanding the building’s architecture. The parish church and its cemetery were listed as historic monuments by decree on 1 April 1933.

The Chapel of Saint-Ambroise dates from the 17th century and is one of two historic religious buildings still standing in Locmaria-Berrien. Together with Notre-Dame, it offers a comparison between the 16th and 17th centuries. If you are interested in religious architecture, you can consider the two buildings in terms of their dates: their construction dates represent successive centuries.

Mining history and the former site

The Maison de la mine presents an exhibition on the mining history of Locmaria-Berrien at the Espace Muséal Minier. If appropriate, this can be supplemented with a visit to the former mine site. This offers two different ways to explore the subject: the exhibition and the option of also visiting the site of the former mining works. Lead and silver deposits at the Ancienne mine de Locmaria-Berrien had been mined since antiquity; in the 18th century, the site was an important mining area.

The former mining site is open year-round for independent visits or guided tours with the museum’s volunteer staff. The route follows the canal. For planning your visit, it is advisable to check the local arrangements before travelling. This will help you decide whether the exhibition is sufficient for your interests or whether you would also like to plan a visit to the former site.

Les deux vallées along the former railway line

The Les deux vallées route follows a 1.4-kilometre voie verte along the former Morlaix–Carhaix railway line. The described section of the voie verte gives the route a direct connection to the former railway line. Its historical perspective differs from religious architecture and mining: the focus here is railway infrastructure.

When choosing an area of interest, it helps to consider the differences between the topics and their formats. Notre-Dame and Saint-Ambroise make it possible to compare two centuries of religious architecture. Mining history is covered by an exhibition and the option of visiting the former site; Les deux vallées adds the former railway line to the selection. Which perspective shapes your trip depends on whether you are more interested in architectural history, mining or historic transport infrastructure.
