Explore Concarneau through two distinct facets of its cultural heritage: the historic buildings of the Ville Close and the maritime history of fishing. The Ville Close is the historic center; the collection at the Musée de la Pêche complements its architectural history with the history of fishing. For planning your visit, it is important to know that the museum is currently closed.

Ville Close: Beffroi, fortifications, and houses

At the entrance to the Ville Close stands the Beffroi. Built in 1906, it became a landmark of Concarneau. The fortifications of the Ville Close have been classified as a Monument historique since 1899. This highlights two distinct historical reference points: the construction date of an individual structure and the classification of the fortifications. Together, they offer insight into the architectural history of the historic center.

The Ville Close is still home to Concarneau’s oldest houses, including houses with granite gable facades and half-timbered houses. The two building styles create different impressions: the design of the gable stands out on the granite-gabled houses, while half-timbering reveals a different type of house construction. In this way, the residential buildings complement the view of the Beffroi and the fortifications. The historic Ville Close can therefore be explored not only through a single landmark, but also through its houses.

Tours and exhibitions at the Maison du Patrimoine

Tours led by Concarneau’s heritage service start in the Logis des gardes at the Maison du Patrimoine. The tower and the Logis du gouverneur in the Maison provide access to the fortifications of the Ville Close. The Maison also hosts temporary exhibitions on local heritage each year.

These ways of exploring the site have different focuses: on a guided tour, the municipal heritage service presents the heritage; from the tower and Logis, the focus is on the fortifications. The temporary exhibitions highlight different local heritage themes each year. If an exhibition is central to your visit, check the current dates in advance.

Maritime history and visit planning

The Musée de la Pêche has an extensive maritime collection featuring boats, work-related objects, and models relating to fishing, a historic activity in Concarneau. The museum thus takes you beyond the architectural history of the Ville Close to another aspect of the city’s history. The different collection items offer varied ways to explore fishing: boats, objects used in the work, and models.

A municipal walking tour of about one hour, exploring Concarneau’s historic districts, starts at the Musée de la Pêche. The museum has been closed to the public since November 3, 2025, for 18 months of construction work. Before visiting, check whether it has reopened.
