Esquibien offers several distinct reasons to stay: protected coastal scenery, chapels with different historical connections, a walking route, water sports and a botanical park. Would you mainly like to spend time by the water, discover architectural history, or plan a particular course or excursion?
Coast, Beach and Board Sports
The protected Trez Ar Goarem coastal area covers 75.86 hectares and is part of the Cap Sizun – Baie de Douarnenez coastal unit. Sainte-Évette beach faces east and is sheltered from the prevailing winds. Trez Goarem, meanwhile, is considered a sought-after spot among board-sports enthusiasts. These offer different coastal features: a protected area, a specific aspect of the beach's location, and a place sought out for board sports.
Chapels with Architectural and Local History
The current Sainte-Edwette Chapel building dates from 1743. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Edwette, who is regarded as the protector of fishermen in Audierne Bay. It stands by the sea in the historic commune of Esquibien, south of the village of Landrevet. Beside it is a small Gallic stele with a square cross-section, engraved with two crosses. An inscription is interpreted as indicating that the west gable and bell tower were restored in 1770.
Sainte-Brigitte Chapel lies in a wooded valley south of the village of Landugentel. According to a traditional account, it was moved in 1651 from Lanuign in Beuzec-Cap-Sizun to Traon-Lannugentel in Esquibien. Its location in the valley and the account of its relocation offer a different perspective on local history from the architectural and inscriptional features of Sainte-Edwette.
Walking and Water Sports
Le circuit d'Esquibien - PR® 17 is a nine-kilometre walking route rated as easy, with a stated duration of three hours. It starts at the car park at the Sainte-Évette embarkation point. Route details may be revised, so check the information before setting out.
Centre Nautique Cap Sizun offers canoeing and kayaking, catamaran sailing, funboarding, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing. The centre also offers sailing lessons, equipment rental and guided excursions. During peak season, half-day Jardin des Mers courses for children aged four and up, as well as Optimist, windsurfing and catamaran courses, are offered Monday to Friday. The programme and seasonal availability may change; check course availability for your travel dates.
Harbour and Connection to ĂŽle de Sein
The Port of Sainte-Évette has an embarkation ramp for the connection to Île de Sein. If you include this connection in your travel plans, check the timetable for your chosen day. The berths are divided into separate areas for recreational boating and professional maritime use.
Ar Paeron Botanical Park
Ar Paeron Botanical Park in Esquibien features nearly 3,000 plant, flower and tree species from around the world. A waymarked trail leads to a medicinal plant garden, through a valley of grasses, to an English rose garden, through a bamboo grove and into an exotic fruit garden. The park thus offers a botanical focus alongside the coast, chapels and water-based activities. Check the park's opening hours separately before making a firm plan to visit.
Plan Activities Around Your Travel Dates
The timing varies: the walking route is listed as taking three hours, while water-sports courses are limited to peak season and run Monday to Friday. The park's opening hours should be checked separately. If a course is a deciding factor for you, first check that your travel dates match its schedule.
