A 17th-century wall painting was discovered beneath the plaster of the Saint-Joseph Chapel in 1981; a stained-glass window in the Saint-Annouarn Church dates from 1539. Together, the two buildings give Peumérit’s historic sites a tangible form. There is also a local producers’ market, the La Pommeraie animal park, and opportunities to get active on a fitness trail or hiking paths. The range of things to do thus extends from art and architectural history to food, animals and exercise.
Saint-Annouarn and Saint-Joseph: two historic landmarks
The Saint-Annouarn Church was built between the 12th and 16th centuries and displays architectural features of the Pont-Croix school. Its listed stained-glass window, in the Flamboyant Gothic style, dates from 1539. The long construction period and the precisely dated window offer two perspectives on the same building: its development over several centuries, and a specific work from the 16th century. The church is open to the public in summer on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., from mid-July to mid-August. Check the current opening schedule before your visit.
The Saint-Joseph Chapel was founded in 1649 by the lords of Rubien. In 1981, a 17th-century wall painting inspired by folk art was discovered beneath the plaster. The chapel is set in a green, enclosed grounds and was listed as a historic monument by decree dated December 21, 1984. While Saint-Annouarn highlights a long construction period and a dated window, Saint-Joseph stands out for its founding, wall painting and listing as a historic monument.
Local producers’ market
A local producers’ market takes place from February to November in the chapel’s green, enclosed grounds. Vendors bring together cheese, milk, bread, vegetables and honey. The different time periods matter when planning a visit to both the church and the market: the church’s opening period falls within the longer market season. If you want to include both in your trip, check the current market day against the opening schedule.
Animals, exercise and hiking trails
The La Pommeraie animal park offers a walk through wooded, flower-filled grounds, with opportunities to encounter farm animals. It also has educational beehives and an exhibition about bees. By contrast, physical activity is the focus at the Espace sportif et de loisirs in Peumérit: the fitness trail has various stations for endurance training, strength training and stretching. Hiking trails in Peumérit lead to the menhirs and the Penquelenec dolmen, which make good stopping points along the way. The fitness trail’s stations structure your workout; on the hiking trails, the menhirs and dolmen provide stopping points.
