Baye brings together several themes to consider when planning a trip: church and architectural history, historic crosses and fountains, chocolate experiences, and a circular walk with a specified distance and duration. You can decide in advance whether your main focus will be heritage, a course, or time on foot. The surrounding area also offers points of interest: Quimperlé and Pont-Aven each have their own historical and cultural character.

Church and Architectural History in Baye

The parish of Baye is documented from the 11th century under the name “Plebs Beia.” The parish church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens was rebuilt on its original site between 1842 and 1850. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross; the bell tower dates from the 17th century. The church’s construction history and the age of the tower thus refer to different periods, which are easy to consider separately.

Other local heritage sites include the Kerlouret Cross, also known as Kerloret, from the 17th century, and the Croix du Leing, which also dates from that century. The latter is also known as the Croix de la lande de Baye and was restored in 1897. The former rectory dates from 1847–1848 and now houses the town hall. The Saint Cornely and Saint Eloi fountain is in the town centre; the Locquillec fountain is also part of the heritage, and may also be known as the Saint Illec fountain. The Kermorial manor house dates from 1786.

Locquillec, Chocolate and a Circular Walk

Locquillec also offers a glimpse of several historical periods: the village has a well-preserved traditional layout, as well as remains and structures dating from the Iron Age to the 19th century. Southwest of Locquillec is a hemispherical Iron Age stele. This broad time span distinguishes this aspect of the heritage from the more recent dates associated with the parish church and manor house.

For a different kind of discovery, Baye is home to the Instant Show'Co workshop and shop at 196 rue Jean-Marie Carer. Visitors can discover chocolates, biscuits and other confectionery there; products can also be ordered online. The selection may change, so check in advance if a particular product is important to you. Instant Show'Co also offers chocolate-making courses at its workshop in Baye, including a course on making individually designed chocolate bars and delicious bars. If you would like to book a course, check before your trip whether it is available on your preferred date.

The “Boucle de Baye” circular walk is 6 km long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. This approximate duration gives you a clear timeframe for planning. Check the route conditions before setting out. This lets you treat the walk as a distinct activity alongside sightseeing and chocolate experiences, without conflating the different options.

Quimperlé and Pont-Aven as Further Points of Interest

Quimperlé is less than a ten-minute drive from Baye. The town is known as a “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire” and has a historic centre. Pont-Aven is about 10 km away, is known as the “Town of Painters,” and has a museum that traces its artistic history. The two towns therefore offer different cultural points of reference: Quimperlé for its historic town centre, and Pont-Aven for its artistic history.

When choosing a destination, you can weigh these features against what Baye has to offer: the area’s history spans from the Iron Age to 19th-century buildings, while the parish church and crosses provide specific examples of local architectural and religious history. A chocolate course offers a different focus; the Boucle de Baye adds a clearly stated distance and approximate duration to your plans. Which of these themes matters most to you can help you decide how Baye and its surroundings fit your travel interests.
