Plougoulm brings together a dune-fringed coast, paths along estuaries, and a diverse architectural history. This offers different ways to plan a trip: the natural area of Pen an Dour, hiking routes with their own distinct itineraries, or historic sites such as Saint-Colomban Church and the Chapel of Prat-Coulm. The Gouel an Eost festival also showcases local produce and food culture.

Coastal Landscape and Paths

Enez Glaz is a sandy beach lined with dunes, set within the protected dune belt of Theven-Pen an Dour. The Circuit de Pen An Dour passes through the natural area of Pen an Dour between two estuaries, where it offers remarkable views. The beach and dunes on the one hand, and the landscape along the estuaries on the other, offer distinct natural features.

The Circuit de Pen An Dour circular route is listed as five kilometres long, with an approximate duration of one and a half hours. For a three-kilometre stretch, it follows the Anse du Guillec along the GR34 before returning to the starting point. Another route runs from the Prat-Coulm Chapel to the sea, following the Guillec’s final meanders. The restored Saint-Jacques Viaduct lies along this hiking trail. The routes described therefore differ both in form and in their landmarks: for the Circuit, the focus is on its circular layout, length, and approximate duration; for the Saint-Jacques route, it is the path from the chapel to the sea.

Tides also shape a section of the coastal trail: at low tide, hikers on the GR34 use the Pont du Cantel bridge to cross the horn. If you plan to cross here, check the tide times. Before setting out on the Circuit, it is advisable to check the current route description and trail signs.

Church, Stele, and Chapel Precinct

The side portal of Saint-Colomban Church dates from 1701. The church treasury houses a processional cross dating from 1643. These dates refer to different features and bring the long architectural and object history of the same site into focus.

A 15th-century Gothic calvary, 4.50 metres high, stands in Plougoulm cemetery. Along with the ossuary, it was listed as a historic monument by decree on 23 September 1970. It should be distinguished from the calvary in the Prat-Coulm chapel precinct: this dates from 1865 and includes an old Pietà.

The Chapel of Prat-Coulm was probably founded toward the end of the 15th century and rebuilt in 1843. The religious calendar includes the Pardon of Prat-Coulm, celebrated on the date closest to 2 July. The chapel, calvary, and Pardon give Prat-Coulm its own distinct focus alongside the buildings in the town centre.

The Kroaz-Méan stele also brings together several historical associations: it dates from the Iron Age and the Gallo-Roman period, and was Christianized. Standing 4.80 metres high, it is a distinctive monument; it was listed as a historic monument by decree on 5 May 1972.

Mill and Ramblouc'h Manor

The history of the Kerellec mill spans several centuries. It was built in the first half of the 19th century, rebuilt at its original site toward the end of the same century, and extended in the 20th century. This sequence distinguishes the original construction, rebuilding at the same site, and later extension, rather than reducing the history to a single construction date.

Ramblouc'h Manor comprises a main house from the early 15th century and a chapel from the 15th century. Ramblouc'h also includes a fountain and a washhouse from the 19th century. Together, these buildings show that local historical sites are not limited to churches and calvaries.

Festival and Local Produce

The Gouel an Eost festival takes place every year in Plougoulm. Festival-goers can sample crêpes, artichokes, and local produce. This annual event adds a culinary focus to visits to historic buildings and trails. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for your travel period.
