The parish church of Saint-Néventer brings Plounéventer’s building history to life: it was rebuilt in 1874, while the south porch bears the date 1679. A hike on the Circuit de Kerillien could also be one of the possible focuses of your plans. This lets you decide in advance whether you are mainly interested in architectural history or would like to make time for a hike.

Church and Chapel: Different Perspectives

The parish church of Saint-Néventer in Plounéventer was rebuilt in 1874 to the plans of the architect Olivier. The date 1679 appears on the south porch. The two dates refer to different parts of the building and bring together two periods: the church’s reconstruction in the 19th century and the older porch. This distinction is a helpful starting point for looking at the architecture.

The Chapelle Saint-Mélar in Plounéventer houses a statue of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. This adds another sacred subject to the building history: the depiction of a saint.

Manor and Château: Architectural Forms and History

Construction of the Manoir de Mézarnou was completed around 1525. Its enclosed courtyard complex includes a stair tower whose floor plan transitions from an octagon to a square. This change in shape makes a specific architectural detail the focal point; at the same time, the manor can be understood through its courtyard complex rather than as just a single building.

By decree of April 9, 2002, the entire Manoir de Mézarnou was designated a Monument historique. This also includes the courtyard floor, the south courtyard wall and the basin within it. The protected status therefore applies to the complex and its named components.

The Château de Brézal was rebuilt around 1850 by Guillaume Le Roux on the site of an older building. The estate includes a park, a chapel, a dovecote, outbuildings and a pond. These features show that the estate encompasses more than the château itself. If you are planning a visit, check current access arrangements in advance.

Paper Mill History and Landscape

The former Moulin à papier de Brézal stands on a millrace of the Elorn between Pont-Christ and La Roche-Maurice. Production of 3,000 reams of paper is recorded for 1776. Its equipment included a waterwheel, a vat and five stamping mills. This puts the paper mill in context not only as a historic site, but also through specific information about its production and equipment.

Hiking and Getting Oriented

The Circuit de Kerillien is located in the commune of Plounéventer. The hike starts at the Chapelle de Locmelar; the yellow trail markings may change over time.
