Discover Brest through different periods and themes: the Tour Tanguy combines a 14th-century building with models of the city as it was before 1939; the Château and the Musée national de la Marine focus on its historical and maritime heritage. Seafaring exhibitions and natural sites offer other points of interest. When planning your stay, you can choose according to the themes that interest you most, rather than automatically treating the attractions as a single walking tour.

History in cityscapes and at the harbour

The Tour Tanguy was built in the 14th century and houses 14 dioramas with models reconstructing Brest as it was before 1939. A medieval building and models of an earlier cityscape thus come together in one place—two historical scales at the same site. Admission is free, and no reservation is required. Check the latest admission information before your visit.

The Château de Brest is the city's oldest historic monument. During a visit, the towers, ramparts and rampart walk offer views of the Rade, the harbours, the Penfeld and the city. The view thus takes in both the maritime and urban landscape.

The Musée national de la Marine presents a wide range of works on the maritime history of the great harbour desired by Richelieu; its account extends to the present day. The harbour perspective thus complements the medieval city models with a history that continues to the present.

Ocean and research

The permanent exhibition 70.8 is divided into three main themes: ocean resources; understanding, measuring and predicting the ocean; and the ocean as a space for navigation. Questions about ocean resources and research are thus presented alongside the ocean's importance as a space for navigation.

Océanolab at Océanopolis also focuses on research: it has been open to the public since the end of March 2023 and presents research taking place right there. Alongside the thematic structure of an exhibition, visitors can experience research at the very place where it is carried out.

Nature at different scales

Bodonou is a 130-hectare natural area spanning the municipalities of Plouzané, Guilers and Brest, and is an important biodiversity site in the region. The overview, updated on 7 July 2026, lists 350 recorded animal species, including 175 bird species. These figures give a concrete sense of the area's biodiversity: the recorded bird species account for half of the animal species listed.

The garden of the Conservatoire botanique national de Brest invites visitors to discover plant life across 30 hectares. Fort du Questel offers a different focus: it is a remnant of an 18th-century fortification and covers six hectares within a network of redesigned natural spaces. Walking routes offer another way to experience the site. The nature-themed attractions thus range from discovering plant life to exploring a historic site with opportunities for walks.
