Plomodiern between coast and heights
Plomodiern offers a range of highlights for a stay: Lestrevet’s dune beach, landscapes such as the Marais de Kervigen and Menez-Hom, and several religious buildings. What you most want to experience—beach, hiking or heritage—can therefore help guide your choice of accommodation.
The fine sandy beach at Lestrevet is lined with dunes and stretches into the neighbouring municipality of Saint-Nic. Swimming, walks and water sports are possible there. The Club nautique de Plomodiern is also based at Lestrevet beach. This makes it possible to consider the coastal area for a range of activities without having to follow a fixed daily schedule.
The Marais de Kervigen lies at the mouth of the Kerharo River, in the border area between Plomodiern and Ploéven. This 22-hectare coastal wetland is predominantly characterised by common reed beds. It offers a different landscape from the open dune beach: here, the focus is on a wetland shaped by reeds.
Menez-Hom is a protected natural area with heathland and heather, reaching an altitude of 330 metres. From there, the panoramic views extend across the Bay of Douarnenez, the Bay of Brest, the Crozon Peninsula and the Monts d’Arrée. Alongside coastal scenery, this high ground brings far-reaching views into your travel plans.
Hiking and time by the water
The GR 34 long-distance trail, also known as the Customs Officers’ Path, runs through Plomodiern. Numerous hiking trails start at Menez-Hom; it is also a popular spot for paragliders. If you’re looking for a specific route, the Menez Yann loop offers a defined option: it is 9.5 kilometres long, has 230 metres of elevation gain and is suitable for beginners. Its distance and elevation gain make it easier to include this hike as a separate option in your plans.
At Lestrevet beach, other activities take centre stage: swimming, walks and water sports are all possible there. Together with the hiking trails on Menez-Hom, this gives you a choice between time at the beach and getting active in higher-altitude landscapes. You can decide which will shape your stay based on your interests; there is no need to follow a particular route or order between the places.
Chapels, churches and Breton culture
The Chapelle Saint-Sébastien was built in 1573. Its west façade was remodelled in 1629, and its bell tower in 1773. The calvary at the Chapelle Sainte-Marie-du-Menez-Hom dates from 1544. The chapel is also known for a famous Baroque altarpiece, which was restored in 2010. Both places offer specific historical points of interest to consider during a stay focused on religious architecture.
The Église St-Mahouarn in Plomodiern also houses an authentic reliquary of Saint Corentin. The Chapelle Saint-Corentin was rebuilt between 1898 and 1900 to plans by Canon Abgrall. The Chapelle Saint-Suliau is dated to 1665 based on the coats of arms of the abbots of Landévennec. The chapel contains statues of Saint Suliau, Saint Barbara, Saint Mathurin, the Virgin Mary and Notre-Dame de Grâces. The different dates and features provide several reasons to see these religious buildings as more than just names on a list.
The cultural calendar includes the Festival du Ménez-Hom, founded in 1959, which celebrates Breton culture in a festive atmosphere each summer. Specific dates and the programme may change. The Pardon at the Chapelle Saint-Corentin is celebrated on the third Sunday in July; check the current programme before travelling if you would like to plan around this event.
Bus connections and choosing accommodation
Bus route 937 runs from Plomodiern to Quimper. In July and August, three bus routes serve the town centres and head towards Pentrez beach in Saint-Nic and Lestrevet beach in Plomodiern. As the beach services are seasonal and timetables may change, it is advisable to check the current summer service before travelling. You should also plan your connection to Quimper using the applicable timetable.
