In Châteaulin, you can plan your trip around different interests: time on the Canal de Nantes à Brest, architectural history and cultural events. There is a practical distinction: activities along the canal are possible year-round, while visits and events are sometimes limited to specific months or dates.
By the canal: paths, water and different levels of difficulty
The Canal de Nantes à Brest offers opportunities for walking, cycling, horse riding, boating and water sports throughout the year. The towpath along the canal is flat, shaded, accessible to everyone and has no difficult sections. As temporary access restrictions may occur, check access before your walk. Six locks and numerous picnic spots line the canal in Châteaulin, adding to the opportunities for active time by the water.
Mountain biking is classified differently: the “De l’Aulne à Saint-Gildas” mountain bike circuit is very difficult and includes a 3.2-kilometre climb. This makes it quite different from the flat towpath. Check the route’s current condition before setting off; the stated difficulty and long climb are important factors when choosing your route.
Churches, chapels and structures
The Châteaulin Viaduct is now a single-lane road bridge. From there, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the town and the canalised Aulne. The Church of Notre-Dame is another specific point of interest to include in your plans: it can be visited free of charge or as part of a guided tour in July and August. Check the dates for the relevant year before your visit.
The chapels’ architectural histories reflect different points of focus. The Chapelle Saint-Compars de Lospars dates from the 16th century and was largely rebuilt in 1884. At the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Kerluan, the choir was rebuilt in 1723. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and there is an octagonal sacristy on the south side. The chapel’s calvary dates from 1639 and was created by Roland Doré. Thus, Saint-Compars is notable for its date of origin and reconstruction, while Kerluan is also characterised by its floor plan, sacristy and dated calvary.
Cultural events and the weekly schedule
There are two different time periods for music. The Festival des églises et chapelles takes place in June and includes four concerts in four religious buildings. The “Jeudis de l’orgue” concert series takes place on Thursday mornings in July and August at the Church of Saint-Idunet. If you would like to plan your trip around either of these events, check the current programme for your travel dates.
The international cycling race “Boucles de l’Aulne” is also held on the town’s streets every year. Check the dates of the relevant edition before your trip. The market follows a different, regular schedule: it takes place year-round on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Quai Cosmao. Check the market hours for your visit.
