Plouégat-Guérand can be explored through three specific themes: the construction history of Saint-Agapit church, a short circular walk near the Douron and the Cidrerie de Cozmézou. Fest-Noz and Pardon events organised by the municipality and its associations are also part of the picture. For planning purposes, these points of interest differ considerably: Saint-Agapit is defined by its construction phases and listed status; the walk by its length, duration and trail markers; and the cidrerie by its seasonal tours, which require a reservation. It is best to factor events into your travel plans based on their specific dates.
Saint-Agapit Church: Construction History and Listed Status
Saint-Agapit Church was built in the first half of the 16th century. Three dates mark different stages of construction: in 1524, François Beaumanoir built the bell wall; in 1536, the sculpted and painted south portal followed; and the nave was completed in 1552. The church is designed in the Flamboyant style, which is associated with the Beaumanoir workshop. This sequence shows that construction work and completion of the nave were separate stages.
The churchyard is also part of the protected site. By decree of 14 December 2010, the church, the churchyard with its two calvaries, the surrounding walls with five gateways and the associated plot were classified as a Monument historique. The church itself was fully restored from 2016 to 2021. The listing status and restoration refer to different things: the decree covers the site, while the restoration dates specify when work on the church took place.
Walking near the Douron
The short circular walk in Plouégat-Guérand is an easy 5.30 km hike, with an average duration of 1 hour 45 minutes. It starts at the information board in the cemetery car park and is marked with green triangles. Along the way, the route passes close to the Douron before returning to the village centre. This gives you both an approximate time and specific information about the starting point, trail markers and route. If you plan to take this walk, you can factor its length and average walking time into your day.
Another named starting point is for the Circuit de Pont Menou: the circular route begins in Pont Menou at the Base du Douron car park, by the information board. This makes it easy to distinguish the two starting points: the short circular walk starts at the cemetery car park, while the Circuit de Pont Menou starts at the Base du Douron. Before setting out, check the route and follow the relevant information board.
Cidrerie and Events
The Cidrerie de Cozmézou in Plouégat-Guérand offers tours in summer by reservation. If you would like to include it in your itinerary, book in advance and confirm the date. Its products include Breton cider with IGP status, Pommeau de Bretagne with AOC status, Eau-de-vie de Cidre with AOC status, as well as other ciders. Several different products are at the heart of the local cider theme; the tour, however, is a seasonal visit that requires a reservation.
Events may also influence your choice of travel dates. Check event dates before planning your trip around them. This will help you decide whether to focus your plans mainly on architecture and the churchyard, a signposted hike, the summer tour that requires a reservation, or an event.
