The Phare de Pontusval brings a historic note to Brignogan. Chapels, a church, a menhir and a museum add to its cultural history, while walking and cycling routes, watersports and swimming offer different ways to spend time outdoors. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between route distances and seasonal offerings.

Phare de Pontusval: Construction History and Protection

The Phare de Pontusval is located in Brignogan-Plage. Its main construction phase dates to 1869, and its light was first lit on September 15, 1869. Since May 23, 2011, the lighthouse has been classified as a historic monument.

The classification covers the entire lighthouse keeper’s house, except for the more recent kitchen and veranda additions, as well as the entire outbuilding complex, except for a more recent garage shelter. The boundary walls and the land within the enclosed grounds are also included. The scope of protection therefore extends beyond the buildings to parts of the enclosed property.

Chapelle Pol and Other Cultural Sites

Chapelle Pol is associated with Rue Streat Porzh Pol in Brignogan-Plages and is dedicated to Saint Pol. The Neoclassical building stands in a field of granite boulders. It was rebuilt in 1870 and restored in 1968. A pardon is traditionally held at the chapel on the last Sunday in August; check that year’s program before travelling.

Chapelle Pol is directly accessible from La Littorale. Check local signposting in advance. Chapelle-Pol Cross No. 2 is considered a 16th-century cross, with figures facing one another and a crucifix. Sainte Bernadette Church is also part of the local heritage of Brignogan-Plages.

Men-Marz is a Christianized menhir with a cross on its southeast corner and another at its summit. The Brigoudou Museum is in Brignogan, on Avenue Général de Gaulle, opposite the town hall. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements beforehand.

Getting Around on Foot and by Bike

The walking route from Brignogan town centre to the Phare de Pontusval is 2.5 km long and takes 25 to 30 minutes; it is considered easy. If trail conditions have changed, check the route locally.

A longer walking option is the 8 km Circuit du phare in Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages, which includes a stop at the Phare de Pontusval. The circuit combines walking with heritage discovery; many significant sites on the Côte des Légendes are in Brignogan. Menhir de Men Marz is one of the points of interest on the Circuit du phare.

Tro-vélo 1 offers a different kind of tour: this easy 25 km cycling loop starts and ends in Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages. This gives you a choice between a walk to the lighthouse, a longer hiking loop and a cycling loop, each with its own distance.

Coast and Watersports

Plage du Phare is near the Phare de Pontusval; its turquoise waters invite you to swim. The Centre Nautique de Brignogan-Plages is at Plage des Crapauds in Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages. Activities offered there include sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and wingfoiling.

Equipment available for hire includes windsurf boards, dinghies, Caravelles, mega paddles, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and catamarans. The seasonal rental period runs from early April to mid-November; availability may change. Check in advance whether the equipment you want is offered on your dates.
