Camaret-Sur-Mer brings together maritime heritage sites, sacred architecture, menhirs and an artists’ quarter, with activities on the rocks and on the water. The different themes can help you make your choices without prescribing a fixed sightseeing itinerary.

Maritime history and sacred architecture

The Notre-Dame de Rocamadour Chapel stands on a rocky outcrop and was especially revered by sailors. Most of the building dates from 1527; since 1935, the chapel has been listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments. Its location, architectural history and maritime devotion come together in one place.

The Church of Saint-Rémi also features maritime motifs: its reliefs depict fishing boats from the 1930s, warships and merchant ships, fishing scenes, and anchors. At the Le Sillon ship graveyard, ten wrecks serve as a symbol of lobster fishing, particularly off the coast of Mauritania. The reliefs and the wrecks offer different perspectives: fishing and seafaring motifs here, and a connection to lobster fishing there.

Menhirs, monuments and the artists’ quarter

The Lagatjar alignments comprise around a hundred menhirs and are considered the most significant in the region. The approximate number gives a sense of the scale of the site; its regional importance makes it a distinct highlight alongside the maritime and religious sites. The Tour Dorée is also one of the twelve selected locations.

The municipality’s digital tour offers another way to explore the artists’ quarter, “Cité d’artistes.” The Wivisites app leads visitors through lanes and studio galleries. Check the current information about the platform and the tour before planning, as both may change. This lets you include art in your plans without treating it as the same kind of attraction as the historical sites.

Scenery and activities on the water and rocks

Camaret-Sur-Mer is one of the locations in the Crozon Peninsula Geological Nature Reserve. At Pointe de Pen Hir, there is an established climbing site with routes of all difficulty levels. Be sure to follow local access and safety rules. The range of routes and the local rules are two separate factors to consider when planning.

There is an important restriction at Pen Hat beach: swimming is strictly prohibited because of the baïnes (tidal pools) present there. Follow the signs on site. Anyone planning their trip around activities should take this restriction into account alongside what is offered at other locations; it is not an invitation to swim at the beach.

On the water, the Passeurs d’Iroise association offers trips on the Pegasus, a 17-metre wooden pilot cutter with traditional rigging. Trips range from half a day to a week. That is a considerable range to factor into your schedule; check current dates and availability before planning.

Camaret-Sur-Mer therefore brings together very different interests: maritime depictions and wrecks, sacred architecture, archaeological menhirs, an artists’ quarter, as well as climbing and boat trips. Use these differences to decide which themes interest you most for your trip, then search for a hotel that suits your plans.
