Ardèche can be explored across very different timescales: more than 1,000 paintings have been catalogued in the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave, while the Monts d’Ardèche is designated a UNESCO Global Geopark. There are also river gorges, highland landscapes and regional produce. This variety gives a trip different focuses—from early art and nature experiences to the flavours of southern Ardèche.
Gorges, Rock Art and Prehistory
The Gorges de l’Ardèche Nature Reserve stretches for 22 kilometres and covers 1,950 hectares. Activities there include kayaking, climbing, caving, fishing, hiking and swimming. Water, rock and trails thus offer different ways to experience this protected area. The decorated Pont d’Arc Cave contains the oldest known paintings, dating to around 30,000 to 32,000 BC. More than 1,000 paintings have been catalogued in the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave.
Underground and in the Museum
Aven d’Orgnac is characterised by vast underground chambers formed in limestone over geological timescales. The Cité de la Préhistoire presents 350,000 years of prehistory through authentic objects. The cave can only be visited as part of a guided tour, while the Cité de la Préhistoire can be explored independently. There are also workshops and demonstrations on prehistoric hunting, fire and Cro-Magnon activities. Prehistory is therefore encountered here in different forms: as a limestone landscape, an exhibition and hands-on themed activities.
Geopark and Habitat
In the Monts d’Ardèche, dry-stone terraces are part of the cultural landscape and the history of cultivation. Dry-stone construction itself is also recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and is part of the identity of the Monts d’Ardèche. The landscape is also home to rare or endangered species, including golden eagles and genets. Nature and human use are not separate themes here: the terraces tell the story of cultivating the land, while these animal species offer another perspective on its natural environment.
Highlands, Art Trails and Outdoor Activities
The Montagne d’Ardèche includes flowering meadows, ancient forests, rivers, lakes, wetlands and remarkable geological sites. Its volcanic formations include Mont Gerbier de Jonc, considered the source of the Loire. The Partage des Eaux is an open-air art trail; the Abbaye de Mazan is also a place to visit in the Montagne d’Ardèche. The Montagne offers mountain-biking routes with panoramic views.
Winter sports are also among the activities mentioned there: Croix de Bauzon offers downhill skiing, a children’s leisure area and cross-country skiing. At La Chavade, activities include snowshoeing, sledging, cross-country or ski touring, biathlon and dog-sled excursions. The facilities and activities available may change; check current options before making plans.
Regional Products with Their Own Character
Valeurs-Parc products from the Monts d’Ardèche include honey, chestnut products, wild blueberries, mineral water and Chatus wine. Chatus is a wine from southern Ardèche, distinguished by its spicy, full-bodied character. Other regional specialities showcase a range of ingredients: Picodon AOP is a goat’s cheese made from raw goat’s milk; Fin Gras du Mézenc AOP is seasonal beef from the Mézenc area, from animals fed exclusively on grass and hay.
Culinary exploration also includes meeting producers and restaurateurs, visiting weekly markets and attending chestnut festivals known as Castagnades. Wine tastings are available at wineries and vineyards. Those interested in regional cuisine can discover not only the products themselves, but also different opportunities to experience wine, cheese and chestnut products in their regional context.
Cycling Routes as Another Way to Explore
Ardèche has several hundred kilometres of designated or specially developed cycling routes, including greenways and cycle paths that connect to the ViaRhôna in places. The Dolce Via, Voie douce de la Payre, Via Fluvia and Via Ardèche are former railway lines converted into greenways. When planning, it helps to prioritise your interests: the cycling routes mentioned, water activities in the Gorges de l’Ardèche, and discoveries related to prehistory and the highlands all offer distinctly different ways to shape a trip.
