Several different interests come together in Saint-Jean-Roure: forest trails with distant views, a mountain biking loop, a plateau and the ruins of Rochebonne. When planning a stay, it helps to consider not only the route length but also the type of route and the landscape. There is also an arts and crafts theme and horseback rides available on request. This way, you can highlight the aspects you want to shape your stay.

Routes and Landscapes

The Circuit de Beauvert is an 11 km loop that starts and ends above the church in Saint-Jean-Roure. It follows forest trails and offers numerous views of Mont Gerbier de Jonc, Mont Sara and Mont Mézenc. Towards Le Puy-en-Velay, it also follows part of the Chemins de Compostelle. These named mountain views and this route through part of the Chemins de Compostelle are both defining features of the Circuit de Beauvert.

Le Devès is also an 11 km loop, but it is designated as a mountain biking route across the heights of Saint-Jean-Roure and Beauvert. The landscapes are agricultural in character and lie between the Plateau Ardéchois and the Eyrieux Valley. Both loops are listed as 11 km; when choosing between them, the type of route is more useful than their shared distance: Le Devès is explicitly focused on mountain biking, while the Circuit de Beauvert is characterized by its forest trails, viewpoints and route along part of the Chemins de Compostelle.

The Trail de l'Aygueneyre offers another perspective on the landscape. It runs at an altitude of more than 1,000 m across a wooded and agricultural plateau. Its elevation and the mix of woodland and agricultural land give this route a different character from the mountain views on the Circuit de Beauvert or Le Devès, which lies between the Plateau Ardéchois and the Eyrieux Valley. The Route Château de Rochebonne N°19 also passes through Saint-Jean-Roure.

Rochebonne: Building History and Valley Views

At the Ruines du château de Rochebonne, a square tower dating from the 11th or 12th century remains; the adjoining buildings date from the 15th century. The different dates reveal two phases of construction: the older tower and the later adjoining buildings give the site a distinct historical character. A winding path leads to the platform where the remains are located. The ruins overlook the Eyrieux Valley. Rochebonne therefore combines surviving architecture with a named landscape feature, without requiring an additional route.

Arts and Crafts and Horseback Rides on Request

L'Arbre de Cristal is an arts and crafts workshop specializing in jewelry made from natural stones and 925 sterling silver. For travelers interested in jewelry-making, this is a different subject from the routes and the building history of Rochebonne. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Les Écuries de Champsac offers horseback rides on request in Saint-Jean-Roure. The rides let you explore trails with beautiful viewpoints. The offer combines horseback riding with exploring these trails; making a request is explicitly part of the planning. When choosing your excursions, you can therefore distinguish between scenic routes, historical remains, arts and crafts, and an activity that must be requested.
