At an elevation of 1,020 metres in the Tauron Valley lies Cros-de-Géorand. Water and village history offer different starting points for planning a trip: fishing is available in three rivers, Lac de La Palisse has a leisure centre, and two historic monuments are associated with specific dates. The market, village festival and a landscape feature at the reservoir each come with their own dates or conditions. You can therefore focus your stay on fishing opportunities, activities by the water or the history of the monuments.
Fishing and Waterscapes
Fishing is available in the Loire, the Gage and the Tauron. Fishing is also permitted at the Barrage du Gage, and the dam is freely accessible year-round. This creates a practical distinction when choosing a fishing spot: the rivers offer three named fishing locations, while the Barrage also provides free access throughout the year.
The leisure centre at Lac de La Palisse has a playground, a picnic area and a pétanque court. It also includes a fishing shelter that is open to the public and accessible to people with disabilities, a fishing jetty and footpaths. Alongside fishing, picnics, pétanque and the playground therefore offer different activities there.
Another landscape feature concerns the reservoir at the Barrage de La Palisse. When it is fully or partially drained, basalt cliffs become visible. This sight depends on the reservoir’s condition; if you would like to include the cliffs in your travel plans, check before your visit whether this condition applies.
Village Life and Dates
In 2026, the village market was held in the village square from 2 May to 3 October; market hours were 9:30 am to 12:30 pm every Saturday. The three-hour time slot is in the morning and gives a visit to the market a clear timeframe. These dates apply to 2026; if you are travelling in a later year, please check the calendar in effect then.
The traditional and themed village festival in Cros-de-Géorand is associated with 15 August. The market and festival require different calendar checks: the market period applies to 2026; for the village festival, check the programme for the year of your trip.
Historic Monuments
The Moulin de Cassonié, the ruins of its farm and the plot of land on which they stand have been listed as historic monuments since 16 April 2018. The listing therefore covers not only the mill building, but also the farm ruins and the associated plot.
The Ferme Reynaud in the hamlet of Mas de Gourrier was classified as a historic monument on 30 May 1984. The two sites are therefore associated with different types of heritage designation: the classification of the Ferme Reynaud in 1984 and the listing of the Moulin ensemble in 2018. This gives you a specific difference in date and designation to consider if you are interested in the village’s monuments.
