Rocky valleys, mountain heathland, faïsses and chestnut groves shape Genestelle’s diverse landscape. Hikers will find several clearly distinct options: a marked regional long-distance trail runs through the village, alongside two routes with their own landscapes and trail profiles. If you’re looking for a holiday rental for your stay, you could first consider whether a circular hike, a trail starting in the village or a regional long-distance route better suits your plans.
Hikes with Different Profiles
The signposted GRP Haute Cévenne d’Ardèche, a regional long-distance trail, runs through Genestelle. This makes a marked route one of the hiking options in the area. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
“Le val de Bise” is an easy circular hike through a remote valley in the upper Ardèche Cévennes. It leads from the river up to the ridgeline, through a chestnut grove and on to heathland and meadows. From there, the panorama stretches across the Bise Valley and the Rocher des Aigles. The trail description thus combines a circular route with a change of scenery between the valley and the ridgeline.
“Faïsses et châtaigniers” starts in the village of Genestelle and explores both sides of the Sandron Valley. The route passes through chestnut groves and along dry-stone walls known as “faïsses.” This gives it a different focus from “Le val de Bise”: both its starting point in the village and the two sides of the Sandron Valley shape the route.
The differences can be summed up briefly when choosing a route: the GRP is a marked regional long-distance trail, “Le val de Bise” is an easy circular hike, and “Faïsses et châtaigniers” is a route that starts in the village. Plan your hike according to which of these profiles best matches your interests.
Landscape and History
The chestnut groves link the hiking descriptions to one of Genestelle’s defining landscape features. The faïsses, in turn, give the dry-stone walls along the “Faïsses et châtaigniers” route their own name and bring the area’s agricultural heritage into focus. Together with the rocky valleys and mountain heathland, these details show how varied the local landscape is.
Église Sainte-Marie is a Romanesque church dating from the 10th century and is classified as a historic monument. Individual visits are free and available on request. Check locally before your trip whether a visit is possible.
Château de Craux stands on the crater of the volcano of the same name and overlooks the Volane and Sandron valleys. Volcan de Craux offers a sweeping panorama across the Hautes Cévennes Ardéchoises and the area of young volcanoes. To keep the two references clear, remember that the château overlooks the valleys, while the volcano’s panorama encompasses the named landscapes.
A Seasonal Market
For the 2026 season, “Le P’tit Marché de Bise” is planned as a seasonal market featuring local food producers. Products bought there can be grilled on site. Check the dates again for later seasons.
