Vallon-Pont-d’Arc offers two notable themes to consider when planning a trip: the cultural heritage of the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave and the Pont d’Arc with the Ardèche river landscape. When looking for a hotel in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, you can choose your focus based on whether cave art, hiking or an activity on the river is your priority. The different ways to visit and route options make it easier to distinguish the possibilities realistically.
Chauvet Heritage: Original and Replica
The decorated Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since June 22, 2014. The natural arch of Pont d’Arc is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The original cave is located in the hills of the municipality of Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, in the natural area of the Gorges de l’Ardèche. For conservation reasons, it has never been open to the public. Instead, visitors can visit Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche, the world’s largest replica of a decorated cave, which welcomes visitors in the hills of Vallon-Pont-d’Arc. A walkway with ten stopping and viewing points is part of the visit; the replica faithfully recreates the historic masterpieces of the Chauvet Cave.
Pont d’Arc and Gorges de l’Ardèche
Pont d’Arc is a natural arch more than 60 metres high, shaped by the Ardèche River. It forms the entrance to the Gorges de l’Ardèche, which is classified as a national nature reserve. Vallon-Pont-d’Arc is a starting point for a descent through the Gorges. A canoe trip can begin just before Pont d’Arc in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc; the route is 30 to 32 km long. To reach Pont d’Arc, you can take hiking trails from the GR4, travel along the river by canoe or kayak, or use the road by car or shuttle.
Hiking with Different Starting Points
The Promenade du Chastelas is a very easy 3.6 km circular walk that starts and ends at the Vallon-Pont-d’Arc tourist office. Along the way, it leads to the ruins of the medieval castle of Chastelas. This makes it a clearly defined option if you’re looking for a circular route with a destination tied to local history. Another hike through the Combe d’Arc starts at access point 1 (Ratière) of the Ratière car park and follows the GR4F towards Pont d’Arc. This allows you to distinguish between a circular walk to the castle ruins and a route towards the natural arch.
Crafts, Nougat and Summer Market
The Village d’Artisans d’Art invites visitors to discover local crafts and the trades associated with them. For a different focus, the visitor presentation at Nougaterie du Pont d’Arc covers its ingredients and production steps, includes a tasting and an opportunity to talk with visitors. Visitors can watch production in progress through a large window; there is also a 15-minute film about nougat making. So, alongside cave art and hiking trails, you can also choose to explore crafts and food production. In summer, in July and August, a night market is held in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc every Tuesday.
