Asperjoc brings hiking landscapes and traces of culture together: trails wind through forests and gorges and across abandoned terraces, passing small old bridges. Church architecture and medieval wall remains add their own distinctive touches. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the named route from Thieure and the hiking trail to La Vieille Église from Laulagnet.

Hiking Trails and Starting Points

The Thieure–Asperjoc–Le Belvedere route starts at the INFO-RANDO sign on Place de la Mairie in Thieure. The Asperjoc section offers views of the Volane Valley and Vals-les-Bains. As trail signs can change, check the markings before setting off.

A hiking trail starting in Laulagnet leads to the La Vieille Église site. This means the visit has a different starting point from the named route. Trail conditions can vary; check them locally if you plan to take this path.

Beyond these two specific starting points, forests, gorges, abandoned terraces, and small old bridges also shape the hiking trails in Asperjoc. These landscape features give you an idea of the kind of hike to expect, without requiring any one trail to bring all these impressions together.

Views and the Water Landscape

The hamlet of Thieure offers a panorama of the Volane Valley, the Aubenas basin, and the Tanargue ridges. This view differs from those along the Asperjoc section of the route: there, you can see the Volane Valley and Vals-les-Bains, while the panorama from Thieure also includes the Aubenas basin and the Tanargue ridges.

At Pont de Bridou, the Chaise du Diable waterfall plunges over volcanic lava flows when water levels are high. If you plan to visit specifically to see it, bear in mind that its flow depends on water conditions.

Near Pont de Bridou, the hiking route passes a silk-spinning mill, known as a moulinage, and its channels, called béals. Here, the route follows the Volane. Alongside the views and natural features, this brings an example of industrial architecture into focus; physical access may vary.

Churches and Medieval Traces

The Neo-Romanesque church in Thieure opened for worship in 1847 and was built using structural elements from a medieval predecessor. The opening year and the older building elements point to two distinct historical layers in the same church building.

At the La Vieille Église site, stones from a 12th-century Romanesque church remain. The former church site is partly built over. The visible stones therefore belong to an earlier church building, while parts of the site are now built up.

From Laulagnet, you can also see a surviving section of the wall of Asperjoc’s medieval fortified house. This is part of the complex; the preserved wall can be seen from Laulagnet.

Mineral Water in Le Raccourci

In the hamlet of Le Raccourci, the Reine des Basaltes mineral spring is still in operation. You can taste the naturally carbonated water directly at the spring. Local access arrangements may vary; check them before your visit.
