Peaugres offers a range of experiences for a stay: at Wow Safari Peaugres, a drive-through tour and a walking tour take you through an 80-hectare site with 1,300 animals from five continents. The offering is complemented by two moderate circular hikes: Le Bois de Bégut covers 9.1 kilometres and takes three hours, while Le Château des Célestins covers 12.6 kilometres and takes four hours. You can choose between observing animals and two hikes with clearly defined distances and durations.
Wildlife and conservation
The 80-hectare site is dedicated to the conservation of rare and protected species. The two tours differ in how you get around: you can explore the site by car or on foot. Exclusive VIP activities offer close-up encounters with animals; the formats available may change. The tours therefore offer two ways to explore, while VIP experiences focus on close contact.
Hiking between viewpoints and castles
Le Bois de Bégut is a moderate circular hike covering 9.1 kilometres and taking three hours. The start and finish are at Place de l'Eglise in Peaugres. There is an information board, a water supply and public toilets at the starting point; these facilities are maintained locally. Several viewpoints offer views across the Annonay basin, the Vivarais Mountains and the Rhône Valley. Check local trail conditions before setting off, too.
Le Château des Célestins is also a moderate circular hike, covering 12.6 kilometres and taking four hours. The route goes from Peaugres to Château des Célestins and then back to the village. Along the way, it passes through orchards, forests and hamlets, alongside streams and a pond, and by old castles.
Both hikes are moderate. Le Bois de Bégut is 3.5 kilometres shorter and takes one hour less; its viewpoints offer views across the Annonay basin, the Vivarais Mountains and the Rhône Valley. Le Château des Célestins is the longer option, passing through orchards, forests and hamlets, alongside streams and a pond, and by old castles. This lets you weigh up the time required and the landscape each route features.
History and cycling
The earliest traces of the village date back to the 13th century. Peaugres was originally under the authority of the Benedictine Order of Cluny, which had a priory behind the church. The priory provides a tangible link to the order’s history in the village.
In 2024, L'Ardéchoise passed through Peaugres with a children’s course; in 2025 and 2026, L'Ardéchoise Verte passed through, followed by a children’s course. If you want to plan your trip around a cycling event, check the dates for your chosen year.
