Explore Joannas via hiking trails on the Tanargue and its architectural history. When planning, it is worth noting the differences: the circular routes start in different places and range from a route along forest tracks to a difficult mountain hike. Visiting conditions also differ for the cultural heritage sites. Château féodal de Joannas is open to visitors only during events; the privately owned Château de Logères cannot be visited.
Hiking trails with different starting points
The “Circuit n° 5: Sur les hauts de Joannas” circular route starts and ends in the village square in Joannas. Between Joannas and Prunet, it follows forest tracks and passes through chestnut groves at the foot of the Tanargue. By contrast, the “Circuit n° 6: La Cham du Cros” circular route starts and ends in the hamlet of Blaunac in Joannas. It leads to La Cham du Cros, one of the last foothills of the Tanargue massif at an altitude of 1,202 metres, and is a difficult mountain hike.
This makes it possible to choose between different features: Circuit n° 5 follows forest tracks and passes through chestnut groves, while Circuit n° 6 stands out for its difficult rating and destination on the Tanargue. The fourth stage of the GRP Tour du Tanargue also passes through Joannas. Check the condition of the trails and their markings before setting out.
Feudal heritage and visiting conditions
Château féodal de Joannas is a square-plan feudal building. It was listed as a historic monument in 1985; the complex includes a courtyard, vaulted rooms, and a keep. It can be visited only during an event held there, such as a market, concert, or one of the Castagnades. Visits are therefore tied to specific events; check the dates before you travel.
The Notre Dame de l'Annonciation church in Joannas was built in 1150. The privately owned Château de Logères, which cannot be visited, is a separate site. It stands on the remains of a fortified house from the 14th century; the present-day building dates from the 18th century. The dates are therefore clearly distinguished: 1150 for the church, the 14th century for the fortified house, and the 18th century for the present-day château.
More activities and chestnuts
From Logères, Ardèche en mobylette offers moped rides around the Tanargue. Terres de Logères runs therapeutic fasting courses. If you plan to take part in either activity, check current availability before you travel.
Roasted chestnuts are served at the Castagnades de Joannas, where producers present chestnuts in a variety of forms. If the event falls during your travel dates, it adds a culinary focus to the hiking and cultural attractions.
