Valvignères combines winegrowing with the remains of a fortified village center, archaeological evidence, and trails through the countryside. When planning your stay, you can choose between wineries and cellar visits, village history, and exploring the landscape. Each activity has different time slots and visiting conditions, which you should take into account when making your selection.
Winegrowing and cellar visits
Domaine du Mas d’Intras is a 25-hectare family winery in Valvignères, farmed organically. It welcomes visitors year-round to introduce them to its IGP Ardèche wines. Visits to GAEC des Vigneaux are available by appointment by phone. A cellar visit followed by a tasting is planned at Caveau de Valvignères; check in advance whether this is currently offered.
Walking trails and wine country
Three signposted circular trails, lasting from 1 to 3.5 hours, take in the landscape, flora, and architecture of Valvignères and its valley. The PR 29 hike, “La boucle des Caveaux,” explores the wine-growing landscape and several wine cellars with direct sales. PR 30, “Le tour des crêtes,” runs between vineyards and over the ridges of Berg; the route offers varied scenery and beautiful views of the Valvignères valley. The two hikes therefore differ in focus: PR 29 combines wine country and cellars, while PR 30 features ridgelines and valley views.
Heritage in the village center
Remains of a fortified village have been preserved in the village center, including ramparts, towers, and old grand houses. The archaeological heritage includes sarcophagi, funerary urns, remains of Gallo-Roman villas, and traces of an old Roman road. The evidence thus includes both burial remains and signs of earlier settlements and routes.
Another notable feature is the altarpiece in the parish church of Saint-Symphorien. It is architecturally designed, with a bay axis, twisted columns, an entablature, and small crowning statues. Ornaments featuring grapes, vines, and tendrils complete the structure.
The Gallo-Roman name “Vallis Vinaria” is also associated with Valvignères’ winegrowing identity. It derives from the many vineyards that once covered the area.
Seasonal activities and fun discoveries
Lavender fields bloom in the warm season and then shape the landscape of Valvignères. Domaine du Mas d’Intras welcomes visitors year-round, while the lavender bloom is seasonal. If you want to combine the two, plan your stay around the flowering season.
A local guide offers food-themed and fun village walks during school holidays and in summer. The booklet “Voyagez à Valvignères avec Helvia et Berguise” offers a fun way to discover the heritage through riddles, anecdotes, and history. Ask locally whether the booklet is available.
A route as far as Gras
The “Entre Vignes et Vallons” route loops back to Valvignères, stops at Mas d’Intras, passes the small Col de la Fare, follows the Ruisseau de la Mure through a picturesque valley, and continues on to Gras. Check the current route and conditions before setting out.
