Music, public art and a striking contrast in rock give Antraigues-Sur-Volane a range of cultural and landscape features. The Maison Jean Ferrat is located in the village square; sculptures can be found around the church, and the basalt of the Rocher du Fromage stands out against the granite of the rest of the rocky outcrop. If you are planning a stay, you can use these different themes as a guide: music and events, local history or a look at the geology.

Music, Art and Architectural History

The Maison Jean Ferrat is located in the village square of Antraigues-Sur-Volane. Its music and video area features Jean Ferrat’s piano, as well as documentaries and television programs. The program goes beyond these exhibits: throughout the year, the Maison hosts concerts, readings, conferences, exhibitions, workshops and film screenings. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the program for your travel dates.

“Les têtes sculptées” offers a different cultural focus. The installation comprises 100 sculptures along the Calades around the church and forms an open-air museum of contemporary folk art in the southern Ardèche. The first sculptures date from 1995, when Jean Saussac initiated the project. The outdoor works are thus part of a contemporary art context, while the Maison Jean Ferrat brings together music and audiovisual content.

The Église Sainte-Baudile can also be explored through its architectural history. It was built in 1820 on the former garden of the lord of the manor, replacing a chapel of the same name that accidentally burned down in 1816. Its architecture includes a five-bay nave with side aisles, a semicircular apse and a bell tower. The timeline from the chapel’s destruction by fire to the church’s construction in 1820 adds a clear historical context to its architectural details.

Traces of the Fortress and the Landscape

A watchtower survives from the medieval fortress of the Counts of Antraigues and now serves as the church’s bell tower. This keeps a feature of the former fortress visible in a present-day role. Another link to local history is the Pont de la Tourasse: via a former medieval path, it provides pedestrian access to the town center. The path connected Aubenas with the Ardèche uplands.

The Rocher du Fromage combines a geological distinction with protected status. The basalt rock is about 12 meters high and stands out against the granite of the rest of the rocky outcrop. It has been protected as national heritage since 1933. Its approximate height and the contrast between the rocks give the site a different focus from the sculptures, the church and the traces of the fortress.

Autumn Event and Regional Connection

The Fête de la Châtaigne marks a specific date in the annual calendar: Randamont has held the festival on the last weekend of October since 1993. It includes a large market of local producers and craftspeople in the village square and streets, as well as numerous musical events. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, confirm the dates and program for that year in advance.

The Vallée Bleue connects Vals-les-Bains and Antraigues-Sur-Volane with a row of 1,000 hydrangeas planted along the road since 2009. This landscape feature differs from the cultural themes in the village: the focus here is on the connection between the two named places and the row of plants along the road. Together, the artworks, architectural and fortress history, geology and festival offer different points of reference for shaping your visit around the themes that interest you.
