Lac de Saint-Martial is an artificial lake in the maar crater of an extinct volcano. Its crater setting points to its volcanic origins, while the present-day expanse of water reflects a later change: the lake was filled in 1974 after a dam was built upstream from Moulinou. The year therefore refers to the filling of the present-day lake, not the formation of the volcano. This distinction helps separate the volcanic landform from the more recent history of the lake. Saint-Martial thus offers a specific landscape feature to consider when choosing a destination.

Landscape and protected area

Saint-Martial is one of the municipalities in the Natura 2000 and ENS area of Sucs Gerbier-Mézenc. This places the municipality within the wider protected area. If you include the area’s designation in your plans, check the current boundaries and names, as protected-area management may change.

Hikes and views

The volcanic summit of Suc de Lestrat is 950 metres high and offers beautiful views of the Sucs and the lake. Near Saint-Martial, the marked, free climb up Mont Gerbier de Jonc takes about 30 minutes and offers a 360-degree panorama. Each viewpoint has its own focus: from Suc de Lestrat, you can see the Sucs and the lake, while Mont Gerbier de Jonc offers a panoramic view in every direction. Access conditions for the climb may change; check them before your visit.

The circular hike around Lac de Saint-Martial and Suc de Lestrat starts and ends on the access road to the Saint-Martial leisure complex. The options have different planning reference points: for the loop, the road is the start and end point; for the climb up Mont Gerbier de Jonc, the approximate duration gives you a timeframe. When comparing the outings, you can weigh up the views, timeframe and point of reference.

Fishing and dining

You can fish at Lac de Saint-Martial with a float rod. Fishing rules and dates may change; if you plan to fish, check the current regulations before your visit. This will help you take into account the conditions that apply during your planned fishing time.

Brasserie La Chevrotine offers craft beers in pale, white, amber and seasonal varieties, as well as “les canailles” lemonade. There is also a restaurant area, “La Guinguette”, indoors or outdoors. If you plan to eat there, check the latest opening arrangements before your trip. The drinks selection and restaurant area offer specific local options to consider.

Another place to visit

The Hameaux de la vallée du Pradal are open every day from 1 January to 31 December, with free admission. This clearly specifies both the visiting period and the access conditions. Nevertheless, check the access information again before your trip.
