Saint Agreve lies at an altitude of more than 1,000 metres in the heart of the Ardèche Plateau. Hiking trails, viewpoints, a historic town walk and the Velay Express give your stay a range of different highlights.

Plateau and panoramic views

The Saint Agreve Plateau is a gently rolling rural upland landscape where basalt columns can also be seen. The watershed between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic runs west of Saint Agreve. An interpretive installation at Mont Chiniac explains this. A watershed separates drainage basins that flow into different seas.

At the highest point of the old town stands an orientation table erected in 1953. It offers views of the plateau, the Cévennes, Mont-Gerbier-de-Jonc, Mont Mézenc, the Sucs du Velay and the distant Alps. On the way back, the Les Ribes route offers a remarkable view of Mont Chiniac and the panorama of the Cévennes.

Hiking trails by route profile

Although similar in length, two longer options differ in profile: the Chemin de Saint-Régis, classified as GR®430, includes a 17-kilometre out-and-back section on the Saint Agreve Plateau. The 16-kilometre Boucle Sud N°34 is a challenging route with 330 metres of elevation gain; it passes through forests, alongside streams and across meadows. Check the conditions for Boucle Sud N°34 locally.

At 5 kilometres, the Sentier patrimoine du Pouzat is shorter than both longer routes and suitable for families. It passes through deciduous and fir forests along the panoramic ridge of Serre de la Faye and introduces visitors to Pouzat’s historical and religious heritage. On the Sentier L'apprenti traileur – Trail N°1, hikers reach Mont Chiniac and discover a small chapel and the route of the Le Velay Express tourist train. Check trail conditions locally.

Town history and the Velay Express

The Parcours Historique Saint-Agrève is a historical walking tour with ten stops along the Grande Rue. QR-code stops open audio, text and image content about the town’s past; its digital availability may change. In Saint Agreve, visitors can ride the Velay Express, which is considered France’s highest steam train. Its historic route passes through tunnels and over viaducts, offering a nature-filled journey between Ardèche and Haute-Loire.

The two ways of exploring history also differ in scale: the walking tour follows the Grande Rue, while the railway passes through tunnels and over viaducts between Ardèche and Haute-Loire. This places a town walk with ten stops alongside a nature-filled rail journey, offering different perspectives on the town and its landscape.
