Saint-Julien-Boutières is a destination for travellers looking to combine trails and local history in one stay. The Dolce Via crosses the commune, and other marked routes lead to the church or pass by the village. There is also Châteauneuf-en-Boutières, with its ruins and panoramic views of the Boutières. When choosing where to stay, start with what you want to focus on: hiking and cycling, a themed trail, or specific historical landmarks?
The Dolce Via and hiking trails with distinct character
The Dolce Via passes through Saint-Julien-Boutières along the Saint-Martin-de-Valamas to Saint-Agrève section. The route information sheet dated 21 May 2026 describes the surface on this section as mostly soft, of the Gore type; the route is suitable for trekking bikes, mountain bikes and hikers. There is a water point at kilometre 5.8 of the section, from where a road leads to Saint-Julien-Boutières. If local works affect access, check the route before setting off.
Les Mélerines N°23 is a difficult 11.2-kilometre circular hike. It goes as far as the church of Saint-Julien-Boutières and follows the Dolce Via for 300 metres along the way. The Sentier du centenaire N°22 is five kilometres long, passes by the village and presents the history of local passementerie, the railway and stoneworking on eleven information panels. The routes differ clearly in length; Les Mélerines is also explicitly graded as difficult, while the Sentier presents local history through its panels. The Boostez votre VMA! route ends at the church of Saint-Julien-Boutières.
Ruins, views and local landmarks
The ruins of Châteauneuf-en-Boutières preserve a 26.70-metre-long wall and the remains of a triangular tower. Châteauneuf-en-Boutières also offers 180-degree panoramic views of the Boutières mountain range. The statue of Notre Dame des Boutières is seven metres high and was inaugurated on 30 August 1945. The church of Saint-Julien-Boutières houses a bell that has been classified as a protected object since 2 March 1943.
The basalt quarry of Saint-Julien-Boutières is also part of the village’s character: it is an active geosite in the UNESCO Global Geopark. Check its current operating status locally before planning a visit.
