Ruoms brings together medieval local history, wine, glass art and excursions through a varied river landscape. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the different experiences: the historic centre is about fortifications and abbey remains, Néovinum explores the world of wine, and SYGMA offers glassblowing. Cycling and hiking trails, as well as the route through the Défilés, offer different highlights.

Medieval old town and abbey history

Ruoms is a medieval village founded near a Cluniac abbey towards the end of the 10th century. The old defensive walls around the historic centre were built in the 14th century from Ruoms stone and river pebbles. Another trace of the abbey is the Chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers and its enclosure, preserved in Ruoms as remains of the nearby complex. Together, the village’s founding, its fortifications and the surviving abbey remains provide different historical points of interest for a visit. Those particularly interested in architectural history can consider the chronology, from the medieval village to the walls built later.

Experience wine at Néovinum

Néovinum is the wine discovery centre of the Vignerons Ardéchois in Ruoms. It combines an educational and entertaining wine trail with tasting workshops afterwards. The 45-minute immersive experience takes visitors through the world of the Vignerons Ardéchois with “WineWoman” and explains the grape’s journey from vineyard to glass. The trail includes a tasting room and a biodiversity garden. At Néovinum, the focus is therefore not only on the finished product, but also on the journey from vineyard to glass. Those interested in the tasting workshops will find a different way to explore the subject than on a tour focused mainly on the process and themes surrounding wine.

Glassblowing and a look inside the workshop

At SYGMA in Ruoms, visitors can take part in introductory sessions and glassblowing classes and make their own pieces. This makes the visit a practical complement to the more educational wine trail: here, the focus is on working with glass yourself. SYGMA’s air-conditioned boutique also offers a view of the workshop. A look inside the work area and the classes on offer are two different ways to explore the subject of glass.

River landscapes, cycling and hiking

In the ZNIEFF area “Vallées de l'Ardèche et de la Ligne aux environs de Ruoms,” limestone gorges alternate with broad alluvial plains. These varied landscapes support a wide variety of habitats, flora and fauna. The area includes the commune of Ruoms and almost 35 kilometres of river courses. This landscape is a separate highlight alongside local history and crafts: you can include it in your trip planning, for example, by taking the cycling and hiking routes on offer.

The Via Ardèche is a fully protected, 25-kilometre cycle path between Vogüé and Grospierres, offering a way to discover Ruoms by bike. By contrast, the “A la rencontre de deux eaux” hiking loop is rated difficult, is 16.9 kilometres long and starts at an information point next to the Ruoms tourist office. It is marked in white and yellow as a PR trail and crosses the Ligne. It cannot be walked during high water. Check trail conditions before setting out, as high water or terrain can affect trail conditions and access.

The Défilés de Ruoms on the D4

Another way to discover the landscape is the Défilés de Ruoms scenic route on the D4 towards Largentière. Carved into the rock in the 19th century, it passes through a series of tunnels and arches before reaching a deep gorge above the Ardèche and the Ligne. The route is open year-round, but local road conditions may change. If you plan to take this route, check the conditions before driving.

When choosing a hotel in Ruoms, you can first consider which side of the town you want to shape your stay: medieval history, wine and tasting workshops, making your own glass piece, or activities on the cycling and hiking trails. The experiences differ in nature and can be chosen according to your interests, without combining them into a single excursion.
