Juvinas combines a distinctive scientific heritage with a specific hiking destination. The meteorite from Juvinas is the centrepiece at Espace Vesta; the Les Champeaux route passes through chestnut groves and, in some sections, alongside Faysse stone walls. This means you can find both a named cultural site and a route with a clearly designated starting point here.

The Juvinas meteorite and Espace Vesta

The Juvinas meteorite is an achondrite, more specifically a eucrite. Its original mass was estimated at 91 kilograms. It is the second-heaviest eucrite after Millbillillie. This classification makes the meteorite an unusual subject for a visit to Juvinas: a single find offers a point of reference for both a mineralogical classification and a remarkable size.

Espace Vesta is where the meteorite is displayed. A fragment has been available to view there since 2019 by appointment with the mairie (town hall). Arrange your visit with the mairie in advance, as access to the fragment is by appointment. This means the visit needs to be planned differently from a hike with a designated starting point.

The church and finding your way around the village

The village church also offers a specific point of interest for a walk through the village’s history: it is known as Église Saint-Vincent, has a classical portal and was extended in 1857. The date points to a structural change; the portal is a distinct architectural feature. Together, these details provide two different aspects of the church without requiring a lengthy historical overview.

The fourth stage of the GRP Haute Cévenne d'Ardèche leads to the road opposite the church in Juvinas. The town hall square is below the church and can be reached via the steps on the left. Along the GRP route, the “Juvinas” signpost is marked at an elevation of 665 metres and the “Sous Juvinas” signpost at 640 metres. Check the signposts on site against the current signage, as markings can change.

Les Champeaux and the chestnut landscape

The Les Champeaux hiking route starts at the “JUVINAS” Info-Rando sign on the town hall square, at an elevation of 660 metres. Its wayfinding points differ from the two GRP signposts mentioned above: for Les Champeaux, the sign on the town hall square marks the starting point, while the GRP details name two signposts at different elevations. When choosing one of the routes, therefore, pay attention to its name and starting point.

Chestnut groves are part of the landscape along Les Champeaux. Sections of the route also run alongside Faysse walls—cultivated terraces that add to the character of the trail. Walkers appreciate Juvinas’s chestnut groves; on this route, they are paired with a tangible reminder of the cultivated landscape. The chestnut trees and terrace walls are two distinct features to look out for along the way.

If you are weighing up culture and outdoor activities for your stay, the options have clearly different focuses: visiting the meteorite fragment requires an appointment with the mairie, while Les Champeaux has a designated starting point on the town hall square. This allows you to arrange the cultural visit in advance and plan the hike using its route and signage, without combining the two into a single walk.
