Chomérac lies in the fertile Payre Valley between the volcanic Coiron massif and the limestone Grads massif. The medieval fortified town, hiking trails and weekly market offer different ways to shape your trip. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first decide whether architectural history, the landscape or market day matters most to your plans. For a short trip, it helps to choose a focus rather than automatically packing history, trails and the market into a single itinerary.
The Payre Valley and its trails
The fertile Payre Valley lies between the volcanic Coiron massif and the limestone Grads massif. Hiking trails cross the commune, offering access to peaceful landscapes and panoramic views. Another named route in the area is the voie douce de la Payre, which crosses the commune. When planning, you can consider the network of hiking trails, with its landscape connections, and the Payre route that crosses the commune as two distinct options.
The fortified town, church and silk-making history
The oldest built-up area is Chomérac’s medieval fortified town. It took shape between the 13th and 15th centuries on a rocky outcrop above the plain and the Véronne Valley. Its remains include the keep, a small tower and the ramparts. The keep was built by Aymard de Poitiers, Count of Valentinois. The Église Saint-Eustache is notable for its 16 monolithic columns made of Chomérac stone. Monolithic means that each column is made from a single block of stone. In 1670, Jean Deydier de Chomérac founded the first silk-twisting mill in Vivarais. The historical comparison highlights two distinct chapters: medieval fortifications and 17th-century silk processing.
Circular trail and starting point for walks
All hiking trails in Chomérac start at Place du Bosquet. The Sentier du patrimoine also starts there and returns to the same point. This easy circular route is 5.2 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. That gives you a specific time frame for the loop, which brings you back to where you started. The Sentier du patrimoine also passes the former silk mills of Chomérac.
Weekly market at Place du Bosquet
The weekly market takes place at Place du Bosquet every Thursday morning. Local producers sell honey, goat’s cheese, and fruit and vegetables at the market. The selection may vary depending on the market day; check locally for the market schedule before your trip. The square is a shared reference point for the market and the starting point for walks. If you would like to include both in your stay, plan your day around Thursday morning.
