Labastide-sur-Bésorgues can be explored through a range of highlights: a challenging mountain hike, guided activities in rivers and nature, and the history of the Moulin de Charrier and the Chapelle de Freyssenet. Deep forests, green pastures and volcanic landscapes complete the picture. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on a longer hike, activities with professional guides or cultural sites.
Hiking between a lava flow and a waterfall
The difficult “De la vallée au plateau” circular hike is 13.8 kilometres long. Its estimated duration is around 5 hours and 45 minutes. The route starts and ends at the Eglise de l'immaculée-conception in Labastide-sur-Bésorgues. Its distance, approximate duration and circular format provide a clear framework for planning your day. Also take the stated difficulty into account: this is a difficult mountain hike.
The “Entre Bésorgues et Volane” route offers a different focus. It follows the lava flow of the Sapède volcano, also known as Pic de l'Étoile, and crosses the Bésorgues near the Cascade de la Pissarelle. When choosing between the hikes, you have different points of reference: “De la vallée au plateau” is described in terms of its circular format, length and approximate duration, while “Entre Bésorgues et Volane” is defined by its lava flow, river crossing and waterfall.
The landscape itself also brings together a variety of features. The deep forests include the Bois de Cuze, while green pastures and volcanic formations also shape the area. The volcanic landscape is dominated by the crater of Pic de l’Étoile. Forest, open spaces and volcanic terrain offer different themes to shape your outings around.
Guided activities and places to take a break
The Base canyon de la Besorgues is located at the entrance to the village. Professional guides lead activities in rivers and nature there for different groups. Activities include canyoning, caving, via ferrata and climbing. The base is open daily during the season, from 15 April to 11 November; outside this period, activities are available by reservation. If you are planning your trip around a particular activity, keep this seasonal schedule in mind and check dates in advance for visits outside the season.
According to regional visitor information updated on 9 October 2025, the Aire de loisirs de Labastide-sur-Besorgues in the village centre has picnic tables and children’s play equipment. It offers a different point of reference from the guided activities or longer hikes. Together with the landscape and cultural attractions, it can help you plan a more varied day, without making every stop the same kind of experience.
Mill and chapel: local history
The Moulin de Charrier was built on the banks of the Bésorgues in the 18th century and remained in operation until the mid-20th century. Its history therefore spans several centuries, from its construction by the river to the end of its operation. Today, the mill is also a venue for cultural exchange, particularly during the European Mills and Heritage Days in May and September. Specific event dates may vary; if you want to plan your visit around an event, check the dates before travelling.
The Chapelle de Freyssenet has its own history: after falling into disrepair, restoration began in 1998. The mill and chapel offer different historical points of reference for exploring the area’s heritage: one reflects a building’s former use by the river, the other its restoration after a period of neglect.
