Saint-Andéol-de-Vals brings together hiking trails, riverside landscapes and historical heritage to create a clear travel destination. Wild, rocky rivers and ridges covered with chestnut trees shape the landscape. The municipality is part of the Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d’Ardèche, classified as a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2012. Nature, geology and culture offer you different ways to plan your stay.

Hiking among chestnut groves and the Sandron Valley

The GRP Haute Cévenne d’Ardèche passes through Saint-Andéol-de-Vals. Here, its route runs through chestnut groves and along paved paths. Both the vegetation and the nature of the paths are part of the hiking experience in the area.

Two circular trails start in Saint-Andéol-de-Vals and run along both slopes of the Sandron Valley. The Grimpelou loop follows old paved paths through woodland and chestnut groves. The Pont-de-Sandre loop is of moderate difficulty, 6.7 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 380 metres and takes 2 hours 30 minutes. This gives you a specific time frame for planning your day; for Grimpelou, the focus is on the type of path and its wooded surroundings.

To start the Grimpelou route, the “INFO RANDO” information sign is on Rue de Bourlenc, at the corner of the small square. For parking, the road junction north of the village is recommended. Check route and parking information before setting out, as trail conditions and parking regulations may change.

River, bridge and fishing stretch

On the Pont-de-Sandre loop, swimming is possible beneath the two bridges along the route; water conditions may vary. There is also a 1.5-kilometre fishing stretch on the Sandron in Saint-Andéol-de-Vals. Its upstream boundary is at the Pont du Haut Ségur. Access is seasonal; check in advance which period applies to your trip.

Church and geology

The old Pont de Figères crosses the Sandron on three arches and is suitable for picnics and swimming. The church of Saint-Andéol-de-Vals preserves a Romanesque apse dating from the 10th century. Inside are Italian paintings listed as historic monuments. The apse and paintings offer different historical and cultural perspectives: both Romanesque architecture and the church’s interior decoration are featured here.

In the hamlet of Nogier lies the basalt lava flow known as “Fauteuil du Diable” (Devil’s Armchair). It adds a specific geological feature to the river and woodland landscape. If you are interested in geology, this named lava flow offers another aspect of the area, alongside its hiking trails and historic buildings.

This makes it possible to choose how to experience St. Andeol-De-Vals according to your own travel interests, without letting a single activity define your entire stay.
