Chazeaux combines walks along old paths with visible traces of its village history. Two circular routes offer different highlights: Circuit N° 3 links Chazeaux and Lentillères; Circuit N° 4 runs between Chazeaux and Rocher and leads to the Vierge du Ranc Courbier. There are also historic cultivation terraces, a Romanesque church and the ruins of the castle of the lords of Fages. You can explore the landscape and local history as distinct highlights of your stay.

Walks along old paths

Circuit N° 3 is a shady circular route, 8.8 km long with 318 m of positive elevation gain. It follows old paths through typical Ardèche hamlets and runs mostly through the forest around Chazeaux. Along the way, there are views over the Lande valley. The distance and elevation gain give you concrete details to help assess the route.

Circuit N° 4 starts and ends at Place de l'église in Chazeaux. This circular route between Chazeaux and Rocher passes through natural landscapes with chestnut and pine trees. Its old paths are lined with cultivation terraces typical of the Ardèche, known as faïsses. The route also leads to the Vierge du Ranc Courbier statue. From there, the panorama stretches across the Ligne valley, the southern Ardèche and Mont Ventoux. The statue was solemnly blessed on 13 December 1863.

The two circular routes therefore offer a clear choice: Circuit N° 3 focuses on shady forest paths and views over the Lande valley. Circuit N° 4 combines chestnut and pine trees, old faïsses and the panorama from the Vierge du Ranc Courbier.

Faïsses and village history

The faïsses are historic cultivation terraces on the slopes of Chazeaux. Vegetable gardens were once located there, irrigated by captured springs. The terraces and water channels thus tell the story of the slopes' former agricultural use. Orchards and chestnut trees are also part of the landscape around Chazeaux.

The ruins of the castle of the lords of Fages stand on the hill above the village. The castle was built in the 18th century and destroyed by a fire in 1825. The history passed down about this building is shaped by its construction and destruction; by contrast, Saint-André church is chiefly notable for its Romanesque architecture and later restorations.

Saint-André is a Romanesque church with a choir characteristic of Romanesque architecture. It was restored in 1976 and 1995. The church and castle ruins offer different points of interest if you are interested in architectural and local history as well as the walking routes.
