Privas brings together nature, historic trails and chestnut culture. When planning your trip, you can choose from different themes: a short loop with panoramic views, a longer greenway, historic routes, or local specialities and events.

Views, geology and trails

The Privas–Le Montoulon loop offers panoramic views over the Privas basin and its surroundings. Rated easy, it is 1.8 kilometres long and takes about an hour. The route climbs 102 metres and descends 101 metres. If you are looking for a short hike, the distance and approximate duration are helpful planning details; check local trail conditions before setting off.

The geological setting also makes Montoulon interesting: it is an exposed basaltic volcanic vent associated with the Coirons volcanism, which was active between 8 and 5 million years ago. The loop combines panoramic views with a glimpse into the landscape's volcanic history.

The Voie douce de la Payre offers a different route length: this 20-kilometre, secure greenway connects Privas to Le Pouzin via a former railway line. It is accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, families and people with reduced mobility. Along the route are numerous rest areas, viewpoints over the Payre Valley and cool tunnels; there is also a fun experience for children. At 20 kilometres, it is quite different from the 1.8-kilometre Montoulon loop. Surface conditions can change, so it is worth checking the latest route conditions before using it.

Historic trails and tours

The Route des Dragonnades offers another way to explore the area's history. It follows the former royal road of the Boutières, opened in the 17th century as part of the programme initiated by Louis XIV to suppress Protestant resistance. The route can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike, by car or by bicycle on a modified itinerary. Check local conditions before setting off, especially if you plan to use a particular mode of transport.

Guided discovery tours in Privas are regularly offered in July and August. During the rest of the year, visits are available on request. If a guided tour is important to your trip, arrange it in advance. A virtual tour of Privas is also available year-round in French, English and German. As digital availability may change, check access before your trip.

Chestnut culture and local specialities

The Castagnades in Privas are part of a tradition of chestnut festivals celebrated there since 1945. The 2026 Castagnades programme includes chestnut tastings—from traditionally roasted chestnuts to original culinary creations—as well as chestnut marking, a convivial local tradition. If you plan to attend an event, check the dates and programme for your visit.

The story of Clément Faugier is also part of the local chestnut tradition. The company was founded in 1882 and is still based in Privas, where the famous crème de marrons was created. Marrons glacés are enjoyed in Privas throughout the year in various forms and are considered a symbol of the town. This culinary focus can therefore be enjoyed independently of the seasonal Castagnades.
