Le Cheylard offers different ways to plan your trip: La Dolce Via passes through the town, hiking trails vary in length and terrain, and L’Arche des Métiers adds a cultural dimension. First consider whether cycling, hiking or a visit to the old town will shape your stay. This will help you choose activities based on your own priorities.

Cycling on a range of routes

La Dolce Via is about 90 kilometres long and runs through Le Cheylard along a former railway line that has been converted into a cycling route. Its length refers to the entire cycle route; check the current route conditions before setting out. Another cycling option is the Boucle des Hautes Vallées #2-Le Cheylard, which can be ridden on a mountain bike or gravel bike. The two descriptions highlight different features: La Dolce Via is described in terms of its route along the former railway line and approximate total length, while the Boucle is described in terms of suitable bike types.

At the Domaine du Château de la Chèze, there is a free service area dedicated entirely to cyclists. Facilities include 12 bike racks, eight charging lockers for e-bike batteries, a repair station, water points and sanitary facilities. Picnic tables and a bivouac site for hikers round out the amenities. If these facilities are important for your plans, check what is currently available before your ride.

Choose hikes by length and character

Two of the trails described are specifically suitable for families. The Sentier au fil de l’eau is a two-kilometre out-and-back trail along the Eyrieux. Le Bois de la Chèze is an easy, shaded 5.5-kilometre circular family walk with 263 metres of elevation gain. The trails therefore differ in more than just length: the first is described as an out-and-back route along the river, while the second is a loop.

There are other options for longer hikes. The Sentier Jean Legalland – No. 6 is a ten-kilometre route starting from Le Cheylard that passes through forests and over shaded ridges at elevations above 700 metres. The Sentier de Sarméo – No. 7 is a 12-kilometre out-and-back route from Le Cheylard to the Brion site, with notable viewpoints along the way. These details give you specific points of comparison: the route and elevation for Jean Legalland, and the destination and viewpoints for Sarméo. Check local trail signs before setting off, as route information may change.

Culture in the old town

L’Arche des Métiers is housed in a former tannery in Le Cheylard’s old town. Its year-round programme includes temporary exhibitions, educational workshops, conferences, science shows and various events. As the programme changes, you can check which of these cultural offerings are of particular interest to you when planning your visit.

An interactive tour of the old town uses NFC terminals or information panels to provide personalised digital content. If you would like to take this tour, check how the digital features currently work beforehand. This gives you two distinct cultural experiences to consider: the programme in the former tannery and the tour with digital content in the old town.

Check each accommodation’s offerings to see which one suits your stay.
