When planning a visit to La Souche, hiking trails, cultural history, and a riverside swimming spot offer different options. The hikes vary in duration, and one trail passes historic buildings. You can choose your outing based on the time available or your interest in scenery and heritage.

Hiking for different schedules and abilities

The hiking trails pass through chestnut groves, beech forests, and heathland. The Tour du Mont Aigu leads from the Plan d’eau de La Souche, at an elevation of 600 metres, to the summit of Mont Aigu at 1,316 metres. The circular hike “La Souche, le tour du Mont Aigu” takes five hours, covers 9.37 kilometres, and is rated very difficult. A shorter option is the shaded family loop, Chemin des Endettés, for which a duration of one to one and a half hours is given. The time estimates differ considerably: one to one and a half hours for the Chemin des Endettés and five hours for the Mont Aigu loop.

A trail with heritage

The Chemin des Endettés follows a calade and dry-stone walls through chestnut groves on the outskirts of La Souche. The trail also leads to the Château de Charay, built in the 16th century. The route thus links the landscape on the outskirts of the village with a historic destination. The calade and walls are part of the trail, while the château offers a tangible connection to the area’s architectural history.

Hiking in the Mont Aigu sector

The Mont Aigu sector is classified as a strict biological reserve. It is used to observe and study the natural development of forests, species, and ecosystems. Hiking is permitted in the reserve, but visitors are also urged to exercise particular caution. When planning your visit to this natural area, take both permitted access and this advisory into account. The reserve classification and caution advisory complement the specific trail information, highlighting the area’s role in nature research.

Church history in La Souche

The Église Saint-Sauveur was founded in the mid-14th century and completely rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. Its history therefore spans both a medieval foundation and a later complete reconstruction. The church is open daily year-round, with free admission; check the current opening hours before your visit, as local access information may change. Together with the Château de Charay, it offers another tangible point of interest if you are interested in the history of the village as well as its hiking trails.

By the Lignon

The Plage de la Souche is a swimming spot on the River Lignon, next to the village square. Parking is available at Place Jean Moulin. The swimming spot also has a picnic area, toilets, a playground, and a shower. It offers a different way to spend time in La Souche from hiking or visiting historic buildings. As facilities may change, we recommend checking their current availability before your visit.
