Saint-Désirat brings together winegrowing, nature, cultural history and cycling. When planning your visit, you can consider which of these aspects of the town interests you most: trails through the wine-growing landscape, insights into wine aromas or exhibitions on distillation.
Wine-growing landscape and trails
Orchards lie on the fertile plain, while terraced vineyards add to the landscape. From Châtelet Hill, panoramic views stretch across the Rhône Gorge and the Andance suspension bridge to Mont Blanc. The discovery trail through the Rochevine wine-growing area runs for three kilometres and passes ten fun, educational stops. An accompanying booklet tells the story of the Cave and winegrowing. The trail is also a place to observe local wildlife and plant life.
For route planning, two trails can be distinguished by their stated distances: the Rochevine discovery trail is three kilometres long; Le tour de Chatelet covers six kilometres with an elevation gain of 250 metres. This cultural trail starts at Place du marché. The Rochevine hike passes through terraced vineyards with views over the Rhône and by the Galerie de Rochevine, a former railway tunnel. It is advisable to check current trail conditions before setting out.
Cultural history on Châtelet Hill
A large temple dedicated to Apollo Augustus once stood on Châtelet Hill. Excavations at the temple revealed its architectural richness. The hill thus combines panoramic views with an archaeological theme: you can include the history of the area in your trip planning alongside the landscape.
The Musée de l’Alambic covers 1,400 square metres and is devoted to the tools and traditions of distillers of the past. Around fifty stills are on display. Visitors can round off their tour with a tasting of the distillery’s creations. The museum thus focuses both on the equipment and on the traditional practices of distillation.
Wine aromas and tasting
La Maison des arômes explores wine aromas through nine aroma families in a visual, olfactory and accessible way. The offerings include a scent trail, a touch trail and a discovery trail. These offer different ways to explore aromas and complement the Musée de l’Alambic’s more historical perspective.
The Cave de Saint-Désirat also offers a way to discover wine: guided tours can be experienced in 3D. A sensory trail with scent and touch stations introduces visitors to wine tasting. As offerings and facilities may change, check what is currently available before your visit.
Cycling route and hotel planning
Saint-Désirat is on the ViaFluvia cycling route. As its course may change, check the current route before including it in your plans. When looking for hotels in Saint-Désirat, you can enter your specific travel dates and choose the focus of your stay—such as trails, wine or culture—according to your own interests.
