Three gates shape the medieval appearance of Désaignes; there is also a 14th-century Château and paths along the Doux. You can give the cultural and scenic sides different weight when planning your stay: make time for the old town and museum, go for a hike, or spend time by the water.

Medieval Old Town and Notable Buildings

The old town forms a medieval ensemble surrounded by a town wall with three gates. It has been listed since 1972. At the Porte du Bourg de l’Holme, machicolations and a small lookout turret, where the watchman was stationed, are still preserved. Near the Porte Janot stands a tower believed to have once been a prison, which still has loopholes. The surviving architectural features and the cautious attribution of the tower’s former use add specific historical details to the townscape.

La Chapelle Phyldus is also a cultural attraction: an exhibition space is housed in the former chapel of the Free Church. This provides another exhibition venue to complement the historical themes of the old town and the Château.

Château, Museum and Local Products

The Château de Désaignes dates from the 14th century. At the Château-Musée, the museum explores rural life in the past and local history, as well as the Resistance, the First World War and the Wars of Religion. The village schools in the hamlets are also among its subjects. The collection of themes ranges from everyday history to historical conflicts and the educational history of the hamlets; visitors interested in Désaignes can thus discover the place not only through its buildings but also through its varied historical themes.

The Château’s cellars offer a presentation and tasting of local products. This combines a visit to the historic building with a culinary aspect of the area, without the need to seek out another venue.

Hiking and Scenery along the Doux

The Les Vignes hike is rated very easy, is 4.3 kilometres long and has a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It follows the Doux and starts at the village, which is designated a Village de Caractère. The route’s length, difficulty and duration provide a clearly defined framework for planning your day.

The panoramic loop takes a different approach: it passes through elevated hamlets and offers exceptional panoramic views of the Doux Valley and the village of Désaignes. This gives you two distinct hiking options: a very easy riverside walk with a specified distance and duration, or a route whose description highlights the hamlets and the views.

Below the village, the Plan d’eau des Salins lies on the Doux and has a beach and water play features. This offers another focus for your plans: as well as hiking, there is a place to spend time by the water. The three options have clearly different emphases — historic buildings, hiking trails, or a beach and water play features — and you can choose according to your interests.

The Medieval Festival Throughout the Year

The Désaignes Medieval Festival takes place every year in mid-August. If you want the festival to determine your travel dates, check the specific event dates before planning. This lets you plan your stay around this recurring event, while the old town, the Château and the hiking trails offer other ways to spend your time there.
