Le Béage lies on the Ardèche plateaus, in the heart of the Massif du Mézenc, at an altitude of 1,200 metres. Between Mont Gerbier de Joncs and Lac d’Issarlès, the village offers opportunities to discover natural and cultural heritage. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the specific hiking loop, the various heritage sites and the special access conditions at the Chartreuse de Bonnefoy.
Plateau, Sucs and Hiking
One clearly defined hike is the “Au pays des sucs, le tour du Montfol” loop. It is rated moderate, is 12.2 kilometres long and is listed as taking four hours, with 360 metres of ascent. The route passes through the Natura 2000 site “Secteurs des sucs Gerbier et Mézenc”. Its heathlands are home to wildlife and plant life that are rare at European level. Before setting out, check route conditions and guidance on the protected area.
The Suc de la Lauzière also shapes the landscape here: its flat summit offers an impressive view of the massif’s other sucs. Visibility depends on the weather. So there are different highlights to consider when planning your time in nature: a moderate circular hike with a specified distance and duration, or the view of the sucs from the summit.
Another way to explore the area on foot is the Rando-patrimoine Le Béage. This playful circular walk introduces visitors to the heritage of several municipalities in the area. It offers a different focus from the Montfol loop: here, the emphasis is on shared heritage, while the other route is a specifically measured hike through the protected area.
Chartreuse de Bonnefoy and Heritage
The ruins of the Chartreuse de Bonnefoy date from the 18th century. Surviving parts include the prior’s house, the square tower and the entrance pavilion. The Chartreuse is privately owned and cannot be entered except during guided tours. From the small car park at the edge of the site, it is a 500-metre walk; an information board is located there. Check access conditions before you arrive. The nave is currently closed to visitors because of its severe state of disrepair.
The site is also home to “De l’autre côté”, a contemporary artwork by Stéphane Thidet. It is part of the Parcours artistique du Partage des Eaux. As the exhibition should be checked again on site, it is advisable to find out before your visit whether the artwork is still on display. Also bear in mind the limited access to the privately owned site.
Another part of the local heritage is the church of Le Béage, dedicated to Saint Peter. Built in 1862, it houses an embossed copper cross from the Chartreuse de Bonnefoy. The church and the Chartreuse differ in both their history and visitor access: guided tours determine access to the Chartreuse, while the church, its construction date and the cross offer a distinct perspective on the village’s history.
Choose the Focus of Your Trip
When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the options by what they offer. The Montfol loop combines a specified walking time with a set distance and elevation gain. The Rando-patrimoine focuses on the heritage of several municipalities, while the Chartreuse and the church offer insights into architecture and art history. For views of nature, the Suc de la Lauzière offers a distinct landscape highlight; whether the view is clear depends on the weather. You can choose which of these themes to prioritise based on the mix of hiking, scenery and heritage you are looking for.
