Church architecture, a commemorative monument with a precisely recorded date, and the geological significance of the Rocher de Thines give Malarce-Sur-La-Thines several distinct cultural highlights. Visitors choosing the area for its culture and local history can consider architectural styles, local materials and the memory of the Resistance side by side. A themed trail and the Thines–Peyre route offer additional perspectives.

Churches and remembrance

Notre-Dame de Thines is a 12th-century church built from light-coloured granite and red and beige sandstone. These materials make a direct connection between the building and geology: the Rocher de Thines illustrates how earlier inhabitants of the Cévennes used natural resources from the earth to build the church and village. This makes it possible to consider the period of construction and the stone used together.

The Église de Thines has been classified as a historic monument since 1862. The Vieille église de Malarce is Romanesque. Together with the construction date and materials of Notre-Dame de Thines, these sites highlight different aspects of the built heritage: monument status, architectural style and the use of different types of stone.

The Monument à la Résistance offers a different perspective. The painter and sculptor Marcel Bacconnier created the sculpture, which is carved directly into sandstone. It commemorates six young members of the Resistance who were killed on 4 August 1943. Here, the material, artistic design and precise date are all part of a specific memorial site.

Geology and landscape

Thines was also designated a UNESCO Geosite in 2022. The Rocher de Thines links a geological perspective with the history of local architecture: it illustrates how earlier inhabitants of the Cévennes used natural resources.

Malarce is situated on a ridge. The Chassezac is one of the main waterways crossing the municipality of Malarce-sur-la-Thines. These two details describe the landscape from different perspectives: Malarce’s elevation and an important waterway at municipal level.

Trails with different focuses

The Parcours d’interprétation du hameau de Thines et son rocher features ten themed information panels. It focuses on the hamlet of Thines and its rock, offering a themed way to explore these two aspects. The Thines–Peyre route, by contrast, follows the pilgrimage trail. Its defining route is the pilgrimage trail, while the interpretive trail focuses on the hamlet and the rock.

Guided tours and regional products

The Maison du Gerboul offers guided cultural and historical tours of the village of Thines. The dates in the 2026 programme may change, so check them before planning your visit. You can also sample and discover local products there, including jams, honey, goat’s cheese, farmhouse pâtés and chestnut products. The selection may vary. Guided local history and regional tastings are therefore two different experiences to choose from in one place.
