Pont-De-Labeaume offers two distinct ways to explore the area: its cultural history and its volcanic landscape. The commune lies at the confluence of the Lignon, Fontaulière and Ardèche valleys. This gives you a specific choice when planning your trip: should you focus more on historic buildings and traces of the past, or on landscapes and activities? Notable local features include the bridge over the Ardèche, Notre-Dame de Nieigles and the basalt flows opposite Château de Ventadour. Water activities and marked trails add to these attractions and offer further ways to plan your days in the area.

Basalt and Volcanism

Basalt flows can be seen along the river opposite Château de Ventadour in Pont-De-Labeaume. These are layers of lava flows from the Ray-Pic/Coupe de la Fialouse and Souilhol volcanoes. There is also a 3D interpretation platform on the volcanism of the Ardèche at Pont de Rolandy. The basalt flows are the visible link to the landscape; the platform adds a 3D interpretation of the subject. If you want to focus on geology, you can distinguish between the landforms and their interpretation.

The Bridge, Church and Historic Traces

The bridge in the village of Pont-De-Labeaume was built between 1725 and 1735 to provide access to the hamlet of Nieigles. It is also significant to the history of the name: the village of La Baume took its current name after the bridge over the Ardèche was built. The bridge therefore has both a clearly dated construction history and a documented link to the development of the place name.

Notre-Dame de Nieigles offers a different glimpse into the past. The Romanesque church has been listed as a historic monument since 1975. Its oldest part dates from the 11th century, while the Romanesque bell tower was not built until the 17th century. The year 1975 refers to its listed status, not its age. A Gallo-Roman milestone also stands in the church square in Pont-De-Labeaume and is likewise listed as a historic monument. The church and tower thus reveal different periods of construction; the milestone offers a different historical reference point.

Water Activities with Different Conditions

The beaches along the Ardèche in Pont-De-Labeaume are unsupervised. Access and safety conditions on the river may change seasonally. The municipal swimming pool in Pont-De-Labeaume is open to the public from April to October; its seasonal opening hours may also change. These differences are useful to bear in mind when planning: unsupervised river beaches and a municipal pool that operates seasonally are not interchangeable options. Before your visit, check when the pool is open and what conditions apply at the river. Trout fishing is also possible in Pont-De-Labeaume on a national “no-kill” stretch.

Hiking as Another Activity

Pont-De-Labeaume also has two marked hiking trails. You can include hiking as a separate focus in your trip planning, alongside the historic sites and water activities.
