Satillieu offers several reasons to stay: the Château de Satillieu and its heritage, a weekly market on Place de la Faurie, and signposted routes for walking or cycling. The routes vary in activity, distance and time required; in the town itself, lanes and historic themes offer further opportunities to explore.

Waterways, Crafts and Heritage

Satillieu lies at the confluence of the Nant and Malpertuis rivers. The Satillieu–Veyrines walk is also closely linked to the waterway: it follows the Nant valley. In the lanes, you will often come across the names of old or forgotten trades. They point to a part of local history that differs from the landscape perspectives offered by the walking trails.

Satillieu’s industrial past includes its former silk mills. Residents’ memories of silk production were collected and presented in an exhibition. Alongside the château, crafts and industrial history are therefore also themes to explore in the town.

The Château and the “Maze of Forgotten Trades”

The Château de Satillieu is an 18th-century heritage site. Its rooms include the “Don Quixote” room and the “Marquise’s Chamber.” They contain tapestries and wallpapers protected as historic monuments. Guided tours are available for groups; check the visiting arrangements in advance.

The “Maze of Forgotten Trades” leads through the lanes of Satillieu to the château. Children can easily follow an audio guide. This brings together a walk through the town and the theme of traditional trades, while the château’s guided tours are a separate option for groups.

Weekly Market and Seasonal Vegetables

The weekly market is held year-round on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to noon on Place de la Faurie. Market hours may change; check the date before your visit. The market brings together local small-scale producers and craftspeople. Products include meat, vegetables and cheese from local producers; the selection may vary depending on vendors and market day.

Place de la Faurie is also the starting point for the La Ronde du patrimoine cycling loop. The market and the tour therefore start in the same square, but are different reasons to visit. If you are interested in seasonal produce, Satillieu is also home to Ferme de Garagnon, which offers organic seasonal vegetables. Around forty types of vegetables are displayed at its stalls over the course of the year.

Choose a Walk or Cycle Ride to Suit Your Schedule

The Satillieu–Veyrines walk starts at the “Info-rando” sign beside the tourist information office. It is a signposted, moderate 14-kilometre loop that takes 4 hours 30 minutes. Following the Nant valley, it offers a different perspective on the landscape from the town’s lanes and heritage sites.

La croix du Serre is also a signposted, moderate circular walk, but it is shorter: 11.2 kilometres and 3 hours 30 minutes. The route passes through the Soies valley and offers viewpoints; it returns to Satillieu via the GR42. Compared directly with Satillieu–Veyrines, this loop is shorter and takes less time. This gives you a concrete basis for choosing between the two walks, while keeping in mind that both are moderate, signposted circular routes.

For a cycling trip, consider La Ronde du patrimoine. This signposted, moderate loop is 32 kilometres long, includes 616 metres of elevation gain and takes 3 hours. It offers the opportunity to discover the history of the Val d’Ay through its natural and heritage sites. It differs from the two walks in being a cycling route, with its own combination of elevation gain, distance and duration.
