On the Dent de Rez plateau, Larnas combines a Romanesque church with a landscape consisting largely of forests and garrigue. The plateau reaches 719 metres. Three very different themes set the pace for planning a trip: the church, which is open daily; the iris blooms in May; and a Sunday market whose schedule may vary seasonally. This makes it possible to balance culture, nature and seasonal events according to your interests.

Plateau, watercourse and protected nature

Most of the municipality of Larnas is covered by forests and garrigue. The Nègue, a small Mediterranean watercourse, runs through the northern part of the municipality. These landscape features give the area a distinct setting: the plateau, wooded areas and southern garrigue sit alongside a named watercourse, without implying a particular route or access point.

Dent de Rez also shapes the region’s character. The natural area is designated as a Natura 2000 site and protected by a prefectural order protecting a biotope. Larnas is one of the municipalities connected with it. Those interested in landscape conservation will find here, alongside views of forests and garrigue, a designated protection status as part of the region’s natural heritage.

Romanesque church and a distinctive architectural detail

The Église Saint-Pierre in Larnas dates from the 12th century and is a Romanesque church. One of its striking features is an elegant dome on squinches. This offers two different points of interest for a visit: its place in the Romanesque period and a closer look at a specific element of its architecture.

The church is open daily throughout the year. If the door is locked, you can collect the key from the tourist office during its opening hours. Check local access information before your visit. This makes it clear how access is arranged, without assuming fixed opening hours for the tourist office.

Routes with different points of interest

The “Autour de Larnas” route offers views of the lavender plateau, Dent de Rez, and wooded valleys and ridges. The “À vélo par Vignes et Vallons” cycling route offers a different planning option: Larnas is one of six villages from which the route can be started. This puts a route with named points of interest alongside a cycling route with several possible starting points, without assuming any connection between them.

If you plan to include the cycling route in your trip, check the local starting arrangements in advance. Behind Larnas town hall, at 1414 Route de Saint-Remèze, there is a car park and a bicycle service station. Check the local parking and service arrangements as well. The location of these facilities is specified, without automatically associating them with a particular route starting point.

Sunday market and iris blooms in May

The “Le marché du plateau” market takes place on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is shared by the four municipalities of Saint-Remèze, Larnas, Gras and Bidon. Its schedule may vary depending on the season, so check the dates before travelling. The market is a seasonal element to plan around and should not be confused with a weekly offering that remains unchanged throughout the year.

Another seasonal highlight is near the hamlet of Valgayette: Bernard Laporte’s iris garden grows almost 2,500 iris varieties, which bloom in May. This month is the key point to note when planning the timing of a visit. A visit in May can therefore be planned around the flowers, while the market follows its Sunday time slot, which may vary seasonally. Together, the two details offer different kinds of guidance: a specific flowering period and a recurring market date that depends on the season.
