Chambonas brings together access to the Chassezac, hiking trails and architectural history in one place. The planning considerations differ: the length and difficulty are specified for Les Hameaux, while the rental period for activities on the water is seasonal; the bridge, church and château offer specific historical and architectural points of interest. Choose where to stay based on the activities that matter to you.
Bridge, church and château
The Pont de Chambonas is the most significant medieval bridge in the Ardèche. Historically, it was an important crossing between the south and the Massif Central; it was probably built by the Benedictines of Saint-Gilles. Its importance as a crossing and the probable attribution of its construction to them are two distinct aspects of its history.
The Château de Chambonas was built in the 13th century by the De Lagarde family. Its features include five imposing towers with glazed roofs. The French garden consists of five terraces aligned with the Pont de Chambonas. The details about the towers and garden make the château's architecture as tangible as its period of construction.
The Église Saint Martin de Chambonas also offers historical and architectural points of interest: it was rebuilt at the beginning of the 13th century and has been listed as a historic monument since 5 August 1907. A row of carved corbels runs beneath its also-decorated cornice. The building histories of the church and château therefore differ, despite their links to the 13th century: the church was rebuilt, while the château was constructed.
Hiking trails through Chambonas
The GR de Pays Le Cévenol passes through Chambonas on its fourth stage. The Les Hameaux route (No. 43), by contrast, is a difficult 15.3-kilometre circular route. It passes through the hamlets of Chambonas and runs between vineyards and chestnut trees. This gives you different options to consider: a named stage that passes through the village, or a circular route with a stated length and difficulty and a described landscape.
The information about Les Hameaux helps you fit the hike into your day’s plans; its difficult rating is just as relevant to choosing the route as its 15.3-kilometre length. Trail conditions and signage may change. Check both before setting out.
By the Chassezac and on the water
Chambonas offers direct access to the Chassezac. The Base nautique Pont de Chambonas rents out pedal boats, canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards on the water by the Pont de Chambonas. This gives you a choice of different ways to enjoy activities on the water. The 2026 season is listed as running from 15 June to 15 September. Check the season dates before your trip.
Another seasonal attraction is the market of local producers and craftspeople in Le Pont park. In 2026, its offerings include local cheese, honey, bread, eggs, plants, vegetables, beer, catering and local crafts. Check the market dates before your trip.
Planning your stay
When choosing your dates, it is worth distinguishing between seasonal offerings and the village’s historical attractions. If you plan to rent equipment for activities on the water, the season dates are an important consideration; for a hike, the route details, length and difficulty are relevant. The bridge, church and château offer a different focus through their history and architecture.
