For a stay in Saint-Marcel-Lès-Annonay, you can choose from a range of activities: a circuit around Lake Ternay, a panoramic hike or the Via Fluvia towards Annonay. The lake covers 30 hectares; several recreational activities are possible at the Barrage du Ternay. The Église Saint-Marcel is another highlight, a neo-Gothic building.

Around Lake Ternay

Lake Ternay covers 30 hectares. The Chemin de Ronde runs for about four kilometres around the lake and is lined with Lebanon cedars and a few sequoias. The area and the trail length describe two different measures: the hectare figure refers to the body of water, while the approximate kilometre figure refers to the circuit. The tree species mentioned add a specific landscape feature to the route description. Walking, jogging, inline skating and cycling are possible at the Barrage du Ternay; swimming is prohibited there.

Hiking with a view

The La Croix de Chirol hike offers a different kind of route. It is a panoramic hike with the Croix de Chirol viewpoint as its destination. It starts and ends at the Place des anciens combattants in Saint-Marcel-Lès-Annonay. Unlike the Chemin de Ronde, which circles the lake, this route has a named viewpoint as its destination. This lets you choose between a circuit by the water and a hike with a viewpoint as its goal, depending on the kind of route you prefer.

The Via Fluvia towards Annonay

A ten-kilometre section of the Via Fluvia connects Saint-Marcel-Lès-Annonay with Annonay. The Via Fluvia follows the Deûme River towards Annonay and is accessible to cyclists, pedestrians, inline skaters, scooter users and people with pushchairs. It is therefore not described as suitable for just one mode of transport: the user groups listed range from cyclists to people travelling on foot or with pushchairs. Before setting off, check the current trail and route conditions; on the Via Fluvia, also be considerate of other users. The route options differ in scale: the approximately four-kilometre circuit stays by the lake, while the ten-kilometre Via Fluvia section connects Saint-Marcel-Lès-Annonay with Annonay. This comparison of distances can help you choose a route for your plans.

Water supply and church architecture

The Barrage du Ternay was built in 1858 by Étienne de Canson to create a drinking water supply for Annonay. The structure was inaugurated on 19 May 1867. The construction year and inauguration mark different stages; its purpose highlights its historical connection to Annonay’s drinking water supply. The Église Saint-Marcel in Saint-Marcel-Lès-Annonay dates from 1894 and is neo-Gothic. These offer two different historical perspectives: water supply and church architecture.
